THE DANBURY REPORTER. Established 1872. MOUNTAIN LODGE AND CLUB HOUSE RECREATIONAL CENTER PROPOSED FOR DANBURY WITH FINANCIAL ASSIST ANCE FROM WPA BEAUTIFUL HILL SOUTH OF TOWN SUGGESTED FOR SITE FINE SCENIC AD-i VANTAGES SUPERB SANITARY LOCATION CLUB TO BE A COUNTY WIDE SOCIAL CENTER ~ COST ESTIMATED AT $6,000 TO SB,OOO. I Several Danbury citizens are agitating the establishment of i' county-wide club and recreational center, to be built by WPA financial assistance at a cost of 16,000 to SB,OOO. A tentative site selected for the club house is the high hill just south of Danbury, with beautiful scenic advantages, superb sanitary location and overlooking Danbury and the ad jacent mountain section. The building, a sketch of which; is at the Reporter office for in- j spection, will be of rustic type, and will be constructed in j colonial style, but having all the modern improvements. It will be of a maltese cross design to log construction. tw\ stories in height, and containing 6 or 8 bedrooms with a hall on the first floor 32x80 feet, for lectures, dancing, banquets and gatherings. There is a buffet grill also on the first floor. Centrally located in the large hall is a huge stone fireplace. Steam heat and air conditioning is planned. The second floor a large lounge room, baths and bedrooms. There will be porches on both floors, also a sun parlor on the first floor. Everybody agrees that Dan bury and Stokes county have long badly needed a social and recreational center. The proposed project will be in the nature of a social welfare club. The arguments maintained for the undertaking are that it will provide a lodge open at all times for the accommodation of visitors, a gathering place for any social event, and a place where any citizen may repair at will for hmusement, entertainment, food or lodging. It is claimed by its promoters that it will afford better influences for young people by taking them away from places of unwholesome in fluences such as are so common \ these days, and will tend to greater refinement and culture. { It is proposed to erect the building on leased ground at a cost of from $6,000 to SB,OOO. There will be a road and park- 1 log grounds, as a considerable area of the proposed ground is level. The project will be financed by a WPA loan, to be liquidated through membership dues and > the dub. 1 I Volume 64.
