J. van Noppen, and to you for the pub lication of her lovely poem last week "The American Eagle." It touched me deeply, and reveals to me the quality of a soul that possesses rare beauty and love, to pen such words. I have just read in Life Maga zine, Aug. 31st edition, the story of Torpedo Squadron 8, and I truly hope that many others have, or will read it, and any compla cency pertaining to this war that might exist should be replaced by a more thorough understanding of exactly what our men are fac ing today in battle.. It is the story of the battle of Midway. Below is a beautiful sonnet written by a young aviator only 20 years of age. It was found scrawled on the back of an old envelop, in the inside pocket of his coat after his death. The Board of County Commis- sionert of Stokes will not be in! session on next Monday, Sept 7,' first Monday, but will meet on Tuesday the Bth. No Relief In Sight For Tires Allocation For September. .. Stokes county's allocation of tires for September is as follows: New passenger tires 5. passenger tubes 19, remaps 26. New truck tiros 43, truk rc-treads 30, fibes 40. The board already hay appli cations for more than 5W new | and retread tires. The board !3 ad vised to issue this quota only to | what are termed "Top-Essent ials", that is, physicians, nurses, mail carriers, school buses, high way equipment and others of like import. They are also advised that no relief is in sight to re lieve the critical tire situation and to acquaint the public with the cold facts. C. W. Ray of Francisco visited Danbury Monday. C. J. HELSABECK Death Of Raymond M. Neal v Raymond Martin Neal, aged 26, 'of Meadows, died Sunday morn jing at 10 o'clock at a Winston j Salem hospital. He had been ill for about two weeks. I j Mr. Neal was a son of John H. and Ollie Matthews Neal. He had I been connected with the State I Highway and Public Works Com mission for the past seven year 3. 'He was well known in this sec tion. Surviving are the widow, the former Miss Virginia Bennett; two daughters, Barbara Ann and Gail Jeanette Neal; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Neal, all of I Walnut Cove, Route 1; two broth ers, Odell Neal of Pinnacle and i John A. Neal of Walnut Cove, Route 1; and five sisters, Lt. An nie Lou Neal of Fort Jackson, S. C.; Mrs. J. R. Forrest Jr:, Misses i' Mary, Estelle and Ailene Neal of Walnut Cove, Route 1. ' The funeral was held Tuesday . afternoon at 2 o'clock at Clear i Springs Baptist Church. Elders J. W. Tuttle and J. A. Gordon 5 Dies At Home j Near Pinnacle Dolphus Lee Gordon, aged 56 for the past 27 years a well-known 1 fertilizer dealer and long-time sue- I ccssful farmer, died at his home it Pinnacle at 1:30 oclock Satur day morning following a long ill ness. ' * " » * €'. Mr. Gordon was born in Stokes county September 14, 1885, the 3on of Wesley and Sarah George Gordon. He was married to Miss Myrtle Nunn of Pianacie, who survives him. i .rtfcA, Other survivors include four sons, Lawrence Gordon, Wilming | ton; and Wallace, Calvin and I Jack Gord», all of Pinr.acle; two daughters, Myra Lee and Rachel Gordon, of Pinnacle; two broth ers, H. C. and C. L. Gordon, of Pinnacle; two sisters, Mrs. S. J. Boyles, 652 West Second street, Winston-Salem; and Mrs. J. H. Lawson, Pinnacle. The funeral was held at Pin . nacle Methodist Church at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. B. O. liitchell, D. D., pastor at Pinnacle, and Elder W. J. Brown, of King, were in charge.
