Carroll was register of deeds and lived here with his , family. Cary clearly recalls in ' cidents ot the old days, the old t ' court house, the marble playing yard in the street, the cows teQ-, ered in the sidewalks, the swims I in the river, the railroad built from the printing office down the hill and the wreck when Tough Allen got hurt, etc., etc. . Fine Arts Club Meets (Contributed) Miss Nell Joyce and Mrs. ! Franklin Martin were the charm ing co-hostesses of the Fine Art* Club for its July meeting at the i r home of Mrs. N. E. Wall. The vice-president, Mrs. N. E. J Pepper, presided over this meet ing, at which there was a recori ( attendance of fifteen members t present. The meeting was opened with the repetition of the club collect, ifter which the Secretary's and Treasurer's reports were render ed by Mrs. R. S. Marshall ar.a i . Mrs. Ralph Scott. These reports were followed by a brief business session. Missionary meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Charlie Reid Friday night, August 6. Death of Stokes Man At Roanoke, Va. Elisha D. Ward, aged 75, of Roanoke, Va., native of Stokes county, died Thursday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home at Roa noke. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. j Ida Fallin Ward of Roanoke; f-vo sons, Ralph Ward of Bluefield, W. Va.; and Harold Ward of Roan oke; three daughters, Mrs. Ray Turner of Norfolk, Va.; Mrc. Clyde Grant and Mrs. Clice Meh nert of Roanoke, three brothers, Ellis ar.d Albert Ward of Madi son, Route 1, and W. T. Ward of Memphis, Tenn.; and three lis ters, Mrs. W. J.
