The father goes to finish up a little business he has on the public roads at Oxford, while the son remains to attend to some affairs about chickens, in which he feels deep interest. Wild Steeds and Elevators Should Have a Care. There came near being a serious acci dent at Smoot, Parrish & Co's prize house to-day. Mr. Smoot and three of his la borers werecomingdown from the fourth Moor of their house where the church rope got loose, precipitating them at a fearful rate. When near the last floor the fly wheel, probably weighing 800 or 1,000 pounds broke off, and came with a vim to the floor, almost breaking through and hail it fallen through the hatchway; probably all four men would have been killed, but fortunately it rolled away in an opposite direction. All the spokes, except two, were broken. Mr. Smoot and the other gentlemen thought a jump of ten feet would be better than a sudden stoppage, so they made the leap in due time to prevent an accident. Tomlinson were called to Salisbury to day by the death of their brother-in-law, Mr. John W. Mauny, who died suddenly in that city this morning. Miss Lula Cole, formerly of Durham, but now secretary of the Xorth State Music Co., Raleigh, returned to her home on the evening of the 20th cpuite sick, much to the regret of her many friends ; The following persons from Roxboro passed through the city to-day en route to Morehead City: Professor Fouchee, Miss Lucy Pass, J. A. Xoell and wife, Miss Musette Sathfield and Mr. C. F. Long. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Young, who were married in this city last night, left to-day for Morehead City. After spending a few days by the sea, they will go to Washington City and other places of in terest.
