He Falls to Establish nis Identity and Loses Twenty Dollars. The other af tern oon when the shadows were growing longer in the streets and the day was taking on a Eomber hue, a little grotip of politicians eat in the city hall regaling each other with ye stories of ye olden time. Among those reeled iff was the following regarding an ex perience of William II. Seward, who was then governor of the Empire State. It fceem3 that while traveling around through the rural districts and making sure that his political fences had no very bad breaks in them, he came one even ing to the humble abode of a farmer. It was too far from the town where he was stepping to go back that night, and so he asked permission to stop there. This was cheerfully granted, and after partaking of an old fashioned country supper the old farmer invited his un known guest to take a ride across the country with him, lie having an errand to do in a neighboring village. "With all the suavity for which Mr. Seward was justly famed, he accepted the invi tation, and as they drove along in the gathering twilight he entertained the old farmer with all manner of campaign experiences and stories. The old farmer's native shrewdness caused him to wonder why the stranger should show him so much attention, and at last he blurted out: "Say, be you a book agent?' "Not that I know of," was the gov ernor's smiling rejoinder. "Perhaps you're a lightning rod man, eh?" "Xo, sir; you are wrong again." "Then you're a sewing machine man." No, sir." "Well, then, by gosh, you must be a politician.'" Mr. Seward at once acknowledged the soft impeachment, and then informed, the inquisitive old fellow that he was the governor of the state of New York. This quieted the old fellow for awhile, but at last he could hold in no longer, and he quietly informed Mr. Seward that he thought he was a liar. Mr. Seward, however, insisted on the truth of his story, and the dispute finally resulted, in a wager of twenty dollars. The money was placed in an old lantern that was carried in the wagon to be used in case of emergency, and it was agreed that the first person they met was to decide as to the ownership of the money. Should he fail to recognize Mr. Seward as governor the former was to win, and vice versa. The tost soon came. Driving by the shop of a wayside blacksmith, the pro prietor himself stood in the doorway. The farmer stopped his wagon and Mr. Seward said: "My friend, my veracity has been questioned by the gentleman with me, and I should be pleased to have him con vinced as to who I am. Will you be kind enough to tell him?" The man of brawn and muscle ieered at Mr. Seward long and earnestly. Then turning to the farmer he said, in awe struck tones: "He's all right, Bill! I know him! He's Thurlow Weed, by gosh!" The farmer took the twenty dollars and Mr. Seward was poorer by that amount than when he started out. Chi cago Mail. A Trick of Cross Examination. In an action for payment of a tailor's bill, a witness swore that a certain dress coat was badly made, one of the sleeves being longer than the other. "You will," said Erskine slowly, having risen to cross examine, "swear that one of the sleeves was longer than the other?" Witness I do swear it. Erskine (quickly, and with a flash of indignation) Then, sir, I am to under stand that you positively deny that one of the sleeves was shorter than the other: Startled into a self contradiction by the suddenness and impetuosity of this thrust, the witness said, "I do deny it." Erskine (raising his voice as the tu multuous laughter died away) Thank you, sir; I don't want to trouble you with another question. San Francisco Argonaut. Soldiers Prefer Grain Food. Cornmeal was the grand necessary of life to those legionaries who, led by C;rsar, subdued the world, and who counted themselves starved and were apt to mutiny if reduced to the "famine fare" of animal food. Even British troops have been known to suffer from an exclusive meat diet, as indeed we found to our cost in the Zulu campaign of 1S7S, while the preference of the Ro man soldiery for the vegetable food has its justification in the experience of the Russian army, and still more of the German one in 1870, which carried that memorablo campaign to its triumphant close on the Erbswurst (pea sausage fav ored for a little bacon). London Lancet. Large Family. Patsy Dooley was a very poor arith metician, and was puzzled by a great many questions of numbers which did uot enter other people's heads. One day a new acquaintance remarked in his presence: 'I have eight brothers." "Ye have eight brothers?" said Patsy. "Then I suppose ivery wan o' thim has light brothers too?" Certainly." "Arrah, thin," said Patsy, "how many mothers had the sixty-foor o' ye'r Youth's Companion, Taper Fire Engines. A novel fire engine is being tried by the Berlin fire department. Second Little Girl (apologetically) He used to be an elevated railroad guard. --Good News. " An Animated Storage Reservoir. The Australian lamprey has its prin cipal habitat in the Murray river, and consequently in the dry seasons it is apt to be imbedded beneath the hardened clay, where no water is. As the stream recedes, the animal fills its pouch and disappears into the soft mud below, there to remain until the drought has passed away, subsisting on the moisture which it has learned to store in a special ised receptacle at the side of the head. As a matter of fact, the fish has mas tered the difficult question of waier stor age on its own account before the race of homo sapiens has been able to solve the same problem in the island conti nent. It is an interesting question whether this Australian lamprey is not a linger ing example of the fish of Miocene ages, and as such may be considered as an an cestral type of European lampreys. A sea lamprey that I examined alive, caught in the salmon nets of the tidal estuary, had a dintinct tendency to swell at either side of the head, as if the pouch might le forthcoming in time of actual necessity. If the Australian type is not the absolute ancestor of the British genera, it is at least reasonable to sup pose that it is an older form, and that the divergent genera and species have descended along different lines in the great life struggle. That the pouch of the antipodean lainprey is intended for the storage of water is a fact that can hardly be doubted by any one who has seen the species amid its peculiar sur roundings. Cornhill Magazine. Stage Struck. Two men met on a train going west. They had known each other in the six ties and resumed acquaintance with a vim. "An how's that bright boy of yours?" asked the city man of his old time friend. "Peart, peart as ever, pard. I were goin to make a minister of him, but ho got stage struck and took to that line as nat'ral as a duck does to water, an I had to gin in. And he's the best ehot id Montany." "Took to the stags ph.? And has hfr been successful?" "Successful? .rilf5 r:kon he hez. Why, their ain't a Cwr be named in the same day with V&S . He kin drop a grizzly in his tracks without ever comin down from his perch." "What is his role?" "Roll? I don't savey, pard." "I mean what line is he in?" "Oh, the Mounting an Valley line that runs to Goochville through Catamount Grove and Grizzly Hollow. 'Taint fun all the time either, pard, when bandit9 is layin low for yer money or yer life." "Ah, he does the sensational on the boards. I see. A low comedian." "Nothin low -about Bill, ole friend. He just sits up on the top of the Mon tany stage an drives his four-in-hand as easy as rollin off a log. Ez I said, the stage wuz right in his line, an he's a thunderin good driver." Detroit Free Press. The Baby and the Savage. In the bone caves of the south of France have been found figures of rein doer, mammoths and men cut on horn or ivory, and evidently executed by art ists contemporary with the Elephas primigenius. The men are represented with short, bent legs, and seem to stand or walk in a stooping manner, with the body bowed slightly forward from the hips. Now pass your hand down the back of any iufant under ten months old and feel the spine at the loin or lumbar re gion, where in the adult modern man the back is hollow or concave. You will observe that in the babe it is convex like that of a quadruped (a ten-month-old baby is practically a quadruped); and though the child can, perhaps, get on its legs with the support of a chair, it does not straighten its thighs and stand upright, but is bent forward in the same posture of the cave dweller, whose portrait has come down to us from the age just succeeding the last glacial epoch. If the support is removed the child falls forward and again becomes 8 pseudo quadruped. Blackwood's Maga zine. Not So Green as He Looked. A man entered a busy city office a few weeks ago and asked permission to use the telephone. He walked to the corner pointed out by one of the clerks, looked curiously at the instrument and after a furtive glance toward the other occu pants of the room took down the re ceiver and gentlv whispered into it, "Hullo." A broad smile passed around the room, and one of the younger clerks called out in patronizing tones, "Oh, no, uncle; hang up the tube, ring the bell on the right, then put the tube to your ear and talk to that little hole before you." The man obediently hung up the re ceiver and turned toward the speaker. " !iank you!" he said dryly, "I am the general inspector of this telephone line Youth's Companion. A ew Profession. It is found in Per sia and western Siberia, and Asia as far Lake Baikal, and in the Alps at an alti tude of 6,000 feet. Quarterly Review. Is Life Worth Living? That depends upon the Liver.
