IHE HEiiDLIG-IIT. Cheapest Advertising Medium TnrusDAY Morning, Aug. 9, 18S8. LOCAL FLASHES. Mayor Fetcrson had a fall court on Tuesday morning. The city treasury was replenished by the addition of $10. The Board of County Commissioners nut in regular session at the Court House on Monday, transacting business of much importance. There were a great many country people in the city on Saturday, and they report cotton booming and corn doing well since the recent rains. Prof. J. 15 Brewer, President of Murfreesboro Female College, spent Tuesday and Wednesday in our city, t!ie guest of Mayor Peterson. The charming Miss Ada Humphrey after spending a few pleasant days with relatives and friends in the "Elm City," returned home last Monday. j "Let by gones be by-gones" is no soit of a motto for a woman. She would turn her head around to look af ter a stylish bounet if it broke her reck. We learn that Rev. J. A Dill, is do ing good work at the protracted meet ing at Fort Barnwell, near Dover, N. which lie is attending since last Monday. At the Commissioners meeting last Monday, Messrs Benajah Herring, Chas. F. Herring, W. A. Denmark and llichard Johnson, were elected cotton weighers. The Mayor will have before him this morning several parties for jump ing on and off the trains while in mo tion, when the Mayor gets through with them we guess it will be dear riding. Can any one toll, why passengers from Raleigh can go clown to More head on Saturday and return on Tues day for the round trip fare of $2,00, while the sultry traveler leaving Golds boro must pay 3. The board of city Aldermen on Tuesday night instructed the Mayor to purchase a carload of sewer pipe and place a . sewer from near Mrs. Dewey's residence to Chesnut street. This was a wise move. Mr. W. II. Smith, a member of that popular hardware house of Smith & Yelverton is at Northern markets buy ing goods for his establishment, and also selecting the machinery for the Wayne Agricultural Works. There will be a grand Democratic rally at Pine Forest on Saturday, the 18th inst., under the auspices of the Cleveland and lowle Club of Fork township. Our townsman Mr. J . Y. Joyner will deliver the address. We are glad to state that the Un dersvriters Insurance Company of New York, have made a satisfactory settle ment with Mrs. W. II. Finlayson, and that the residence is to be replaced at once, and a masterpiece of architecture at that. The latest addition to our live and solid businessmen is the firm of R. Edwards & Co., who will begin actively the 15th inst. . Their place of business will be the new storehouse just erected by Mr. Jas. D. Daniels. They have our best wishes. That very polite and popular sales man, Mr. 31arcus Marks, who for the past years has filled a principal posi tion with Mr. Jos. Edwards, has now accepted a similar engagement with the well known establishment of Messrs. Fuchtler k Kern. One can bear the hot weather mors philosophically if they but bear in mind that which produces so much physical discomfort is contributing greatly to the successful maturity of a good crop of cotton and corn. There is no evil without its good. That familiar and smiling counten ance of Mr. R. Frank Beaman, a sales man of great popularity especially among the good people of Greene, can now be seen behind the counters of Messrs. M. Summerfield k Co., on East Center street. The first open boll of cotton, was laid on our table on Tuesday by Mr. Uufus West, who has a successful farm near YeUington's Church. Mr. West is not a large farmer, but every acre he plants is bound to bring forth one bale ofcottcn. Can any one beat it? The stockholders and Board of Directors of the Eastern North Caroli na Fair and Stock Association held a meeting las-t Friday night, transacting business of great importance relating to the coming Fair, which promises to be the best ever held in this section. The premiums offered by the Associa tion this year in ladies' work, both in the art and culinary departments, are exceedingly attractive, and our fair ' The Fremont Institute bee an its Fall session last Monday with a lar-e number of students present. Prof. Hand has secured the services of Prof. W. II. Wills, of Greensboro, a gentle man of much ability, who arrived at Fremont on Monday. Our sanctum was graced on Tues day evening with that old familiar face of Mr. Richard C Holmes, who now resides at Clinton. He is here on a short "lay-over," combining business with pleasure. "Dick" has all the ap pearances of a prosperous man, we are glad to state. We are requested to announce that the rooms of the Y. M. C. A., will be opened every evening except Sunday from 4 to 10 o'clock P. 51., and young men will always find a cordial reception awaiting them between these hours. Half hour gospel meetings every Sun day evening at G o'clock The coming State Convention of Young Men's Democratic Clubs, to be held at JUorehead at tne end of this month gives evidence of being a grand and enthusiastic gathering of members from the" mountains to the sea. The selection of Morehead City as the place for holding this convention was a very wise one, indeed. Our neighbor, the Mount Olive Telegram has undergone a change last Monday. Bro. Melvin Gardner sold out his interest to Messrs. Sadler k Sneed, the editors and publishers of the Smithfield Herald, who will con tinue the publication of the Telegram. Bro. David J. Aaron remains at the helm of the editorial department, we are glad to state. Our heartfelt sympathy and condo lence is extended to Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Beerman, ol Atlanta, in t c bereave ment of their 7 year old daughter Ettie, whose untimely demise occured at Morehead City on Tuesday morning. The remains passed through here the same day bound for Atlanta, where the funeral took place yesterday. Mr. Beerman is one of the proprietors of the Atlantic Hotel at Morehead. It is impossible for an editor to see everybody and know everything that happens, and unless he is aided to some extent by outsiders, many things must of necessity escape his knowledge or notice. Our citizens would thus help make the IIkadhgiit more interest ing ana at tne same time wouiu oe showing an interest in the paper which every one should take a pride in. We ask our friends to help us to the ex tent of giving us any item of news, and contributing to our columns 'occasion ally. John Dunn, colored, was accidentally drowned last Thursday at Hick's mill on Neuse river. Thj coroner, Mr. R. L. Paschall was summoned the next morning, and who took charge of the "We Bid Thee Webome." The ninth annual meeting ot the North Carolina Pharmaceutical Asso ciation convened in tnis city yesterday morning at 10 o'clock, in the Korne gay Hall, with Mr. Frank W. Han cock, of New Berne, in the chair. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. J. M. Hillyar. His Honor, Mayor J. E. Peterson in a few but well chosen words welcomed the visi tors in-behalf of the citizens and resi dent ' druggist, and at the same time introduced our townsman Mr. J. Y. J oyuer, who made a capital address. It was certainly a very fine effort. To this Mr. T. D. Crawford, of Oxford responded after which the Association began its work. At the hall we noticed some beautiful displays" of Baltimore wholesale druggists, such as Sharp & Dohme, Gilpin, Langdon & Co., and J. II. Winkelmann. A grand banquet will be given to the visitors by our resident druggists at the Hotel Greg ory to-night, at 9 o'clock, to which the Headlight acknowledges an in vitation with thanks. Of course, we shall be on hand, and make a complete report. Attention, Democrats ! The Democratic voters of the sever al precincts in Wayne county are re quested to meet in their respective precinct on Saturday, the 25th day of this month, at 2 o'clock p. in., for the purpose of selecting delegates to the County Convention, to be held on Sat urday, the first day of September, 1888, in the city of Goldsboro. Each precinct shall be entitled to cast in the County Convention one vote for every twenty-five (25) Demo cratic votes cast by that precinct at the last preceeding gubernatorial elec tion, and each precinct may send as many delegates as it sees fit. Said County Convention will nomi nate candidates for the General As sembly, and all county officers, except Clerk of Superior Court. The citizens of the several precincts of Goldsboro township will all meet at the Court House. At the time and place fixed for said County Convention, the members of the several township Executive Com mittees are requested to meet and elect a County Executive Committee for the ensuing campaign. By order of the Couutv Executive Committee, I. F. Dor.Tcir, CVm. IrigVIul? For eighteen yesrs I had eczema. Dur ing tlie last live years tlte physicians pro nounced my disease chronic psoriosis ecze ma. Three years ago I was so weak and reduced that" 1 had to go to bed, where I lay helpless for six months. At thutime my feet, legs, aack and body were much swollen. Sly whole body resembled a dead fish, the scales dry, dead 'flesh falling from me in tick flakes. My itching at night dur ing this sis niontl was a terrible tortue. Last Christmas a year ayo I went blind, and my.i;ht did not return for some time. This sad plight continued riht a long, ex cept that occasionally I would manage to get a day or so at a time, until last spring Colonel II. J. Lamar, met nie and gave me soma S. S. S. I besran taking the specific at once, and have continued it up to now, nen l aij well. After I had taken the medicine two or three weeks I noticed a change for the bet ter. The mending was comparatively slow for the first two months, when I Avent on improving rapidly. To-dav mv skin is as clear, as pliable and as oily as ever. 31 v pains are entirely gone, and, more, I am again able to earu'my living. At one time I preserved the scales that fell from my body, and they amounted to five pounds in one week. Very respect fully, It. X. Mitchell. Macox, Oa.. February S, 18871 have known 11. N. What we would like to know is, why he was paid about a month ago for performing such duties, and refusid this time ? Mr. L. Edwards came very near of losing the sum of four hundred dollars the other day, but luckily he recovered every cent. Mr. Edwards has also a store in Durham, which is superintend ed by his son Sam. Last Sunday night as he was absent from his room, a young man, named Julius Friend en tered the same and took the storekcys, unlocked the store below and took out of the money drawer $350 in cash and a gold watch, valued at $50. He de parted on the early morning accommo dation bound for the Northern regions. Numerous telegrams were sent on Mon day iu quest of the absconder, offer ing a reward of fifty dollars for his ap prehension. He was caught at Rich mond tiiat evening, with the cash and watch on his person, and is now there in custody awaiting a requisition from our Governor. 31 r. L. Capt. Swift Galloway was, on mo tion, unanimously invited to address the Club at its next meeting, on the political issues of the day, and it is hoped and expected that a large aud ence of ladies and gentlemen will be out to hear him. Messrs. E. A. Wright, Mayor Peter son, W. B. Is a new and distinct variety : it was hybridized by the large Norfolk Globe, and the Seven Top, a salad turnip, aud combines the valuable qualities of both. After several years of thorowih nltication it has attained excellencies, iperior, it is claimed, to any turnip- producing more salad than the Seven Top and a larger and firmer root than the Norfolk Globe. Combining the qualities of root and salad makes it the most valuable variety for stock, for the table, and for general marketing, and is beyond all question in all re- pects, the best turnip to be had for this section. . The following points of excellence are confidentially claimed for it: ICr" It has no equal for root or salad. 05 It stands extreme heat and jold. Er" It is superior to the Northern turnip. LP They do not . pith or become spongy as other turnips. uJ' It produces salad two weeks earlier than any other turnip. Insects do not injure this as they do other varieties. ILT" It produces more salad than any other turnip. L It produces a larger root than any other turnip. QIT3 It is the best turnip for winter use in the market. Lr3" For general farm market pur poses it has no equal in the Soiith. ALL THIS and more is claimed for this turnip by parties who are in a position to know its worth, but the thing for you to do is to test it yourself.
