James Creelman, who recently Inter viewed Count Leo Tolstoi for the New York World, reports the famous Rus sian novelist -and reformer as saying many bitter things about certain well known Americans. He reiterated his oft expressed views on the subject of man's relation to the soil and declared that life In a city was foolish and wasteful. When it was suggested that, It might be difficult for all men to se cure land in the country he replied: "A man should die rather than work for a man like Rockefeller. He should rre- COUNT LEO TOLSTOI. fer starvation. He should consider It a religious duty to refuse to work for a trust." The count said he considered Presi dent Harper of the University of Chi cago, who paid him a visit last year, "really ignorant, quite a barbarian. He knew less about matters of intellectual and moral interest than a man might learn simply by reading the Review of Reviews, for instance. Think of such a university directed by such a man! And yet that is one of theresults of llockefellers millions. Too Dour For Politic. When former Lieutenant Governor Woodruff was recently asked about his candidacy for the governorship of New York he said: "That's uubottled hot air. It's a space filler for the newspapers during the dull siell. It's out of sea son, asinine, malapropos, Idiotic, silly and strictly out of order. It's the 6ort of pitiful political puling which pretty near gives me a pain. It illustrates the Insanity of the Ingenious Incubator of idiotic ideas in the dog days' Interim. Such a boom would be ossified long be fore it got old enough to even ogle at the nomination. Seriously, if the gu bernatorial nomination were offered me today on a gold plate, with a gilt edge bond and guarantee, I wouldn't take it. I'm up to my neck in business cares, one. of which Is the making and selling of typewriters in Syracuse." "The Divine William." Thi3 story of the German emperor is vouched for by M. A. 1.: At dinner one night when the emperor was stay ing with Ixrd Lonsdale a guest, talk ing to another across the table, quoted a little known passage from Shake speare and, that there should be no mistake as to its source, ended with the words, "as the divine William said." There happened to be a lull In the conversation at the time, and the remark was audible to every one, the emperor included. Turning to his host, the emperor said, with a puzzled ex pression, "Curiously, I do not remem ber that my sainted grandfather ever said that!" Carnegrle Attacked. The literary sensation of the moment is a book entitled "History of the Car negie Steel Company." The author, James Howard Bridge, is an English man by birth, though he has been for years a resident of this country, his home at present being in Brooklyn. Mr. Bridge says unkind things of Andrew Carnegie, whose private secretary he ANDREW CARNEGIE. was at one time, and lays bare what purports to be the Innermost secrets of the Carnegie company, many of these secrets reflecting upon the business morality of the author of "Triumphant Democracy." By the way, Mr. Bridge, it is said, aided Mr. Carnegie material ly in the preparation of that book. Mr. Bridge gives great credit to II. C. Prick for the success of the steel company, but sums up Mr. Carnegie's career in the oft repeated exhortation, "Be suc cessful somehow." The "History of the Carnegie Steel Company" was limited In Its first edi tion to fifty copies at $100 each. A sec ond edition de luxe has been issued, consisting of 450 copies, at $25 each. Its principal circulation Is among New York bankers and capitalists. Locomotive Puff's. A locomotive going at express speed gives l.Oad puffs per mile. A FTER three hours of hard flght L ing the morning of Sept 20 . Thomas remained master of one mile of breastworks. His fcuns formed a barrier between the ea ger Confederates and a road passing along the rear of his battle field which connected the two wings of Rosecrans' army. Great battles often turn upon the winning or losing of a few yards of roadway. At Donelson Grant plant ed his guns upon a road leading out of the fortress and ienned in the Confed erate garrison. At Waterloo Napoleon fought all day to cut the Brussels road and divide the armies of WelWjgton and Blucher. The road running through Thomas' line at Chickamauga led on northward to Chattanooga. The Confederates un der General Bragg were fighting to re cover Chattanooga, the Federals under Rosecrans fighting to keep the enemy out of Chattanooga and march into the town themselves. Thomas' corps held the left or northerly wing of Rose crans' line, McCook's the right wing. The Confederates threw their lives away uion Thomas' barricades. His line was unshaken. But the Confeder ates outnumbered the Federals at Chickamauga. Thomas saw their bat talions marching past his unguarded left flank, the side toward Chattanoo ga. They ran over his slender outposts and even crossed the road beyond his line of barricades. He called upon Rosecrans to send in more troops to form a new line at right angles with WE CAN DIE BUT ONCE. NOW IS OUR TIME. the breastworks. His troops had fought all the morning facing the east; he must now fight facing north also or be cut off from Chattanooga. The troops of McCook's corps stretch ed away southward on a line with Thomas' barricades. Rosecrans picked up brigades here and there from Mc Cook's front and sent them over to Thomas. Each time a brigade moved out another moved in to fill the vacant space. An aid looking over the line said that he found a gap the length of a division between Thomas and Mc Cook. Wood's division was ordered to fill the vacancy and left Its place in McCook's line to do so. It was all a mistake, for Brannan's division lay in the woods covering that gap. The new gap made by the withdraw al of Wood from his first position was opened Just as the Confederate General Ixmgstreet took up the fight against McCook. Ills chieftain, Bragg, had or dered him to break through the Federal line between Thomas and McCook. wheel his battalions to the left and smash McCook or force him away southward beyond reach of Thomas. Longstreet's column, numbering eight brigades several lines deep, rushed through the gap like an angry flood. Sheridan had already taken his divi sion from McCook's front to march over to Thomas, and his leading bri gade under General W. II. Lytle, the poet-soldier, was passing the gap when the Confederates burst through. Sher idan himself was not at the point of danger. Lytle saw that McCook was about to be overrun with Confederates and bravely halted his men to form a bulwark against the onrushlng tide. It was like sweeping up the ocean with a broom. Lines of men were broken as fast as they were made. Lytle decided, upon a forlorn hope charge to startle and check the Confederates by its very audacity. Telling his colonels what was expected of them, he called up his personal staff and placed himself at the head of the column, bleeding the while from wounds already received In the encounter. The aids begged their general to leave the field, but he said: "We can die but once. Now Is our time. Let us charge!" He then turned and rode for ward, meeting Instantaneous death in the volley of bullets that greeted this Spartan band. When Longstreet found his march through the gap almost unopposed he Ignored his chieftain's orders to wheel to the left upon McCook and with a flash of genius turned to the right against Thomas. McCook's remnant was cut off, and that luckless general eould do nothing except flee or rejoin Thomas. With McCook were Rosecrans and Sheridan. They knew nothing of Longstreet's power and the fate of Ly tle and his command. Rosecrans looked at the marching Confederates and sup posed them to be the brigades of Mc Cook changing positions until his aids rode to the front and learned the truth. A mlliTor more In the rear of Thom- of A FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY WAR STORY Chickamauga $9 as' right there was a second road paral lel to the one he was defending and passing through McCook's old line. Rosecrans, McCook and Sheridan gath ered up the remnants of the troops and attempted to pass around to the rear of Thomas and come to his aid. But Longstreet thrust his advance west ward across this second road also and then, facing north, charged up the height which became famous that day as the bloody Horseshoe ridge. Rose crans and the generals with him ral lied what they could of McCook's bro ken line and drifted away toward the village of Rossville, where the Chatta- I nooga road passes through Missionary j ridge. There Rosecrans determined to I make a stand, for he knew that Thom as couldn't hold out forever against the whole of Bragg's army. The divisions of Brannan and Wood so strangely involved in the hapless ! events of the day rapidly swung about from the east front to the south. Until Wood brought him the news Thomas didn't know that the troops climbing the southern slope of Horseshoe ridge were Confederates and not the re-enforcements he had asked for from Mc Cook. Here was a new peril greater than that on his left flank. He must fight in three directions north, east and south. But, although surprised at the sudden onslaught from the south, Thomas knew his ground. lie insitected the new line taken by Wood, speaking to the officers and men and planting here a battery, there a regiment, with orders to hold on or die In the attempt. One of Wood's brigades under Colonel Em erson Opdycke held the key to the ridge, and Thomas said to Opdycke, "This ground must be held." Opdycke answered, "We will hold it or go to heaven from it." The men were al ready fighting with inufckets too hot to hold. The eager rush of Longstreet's men was first checked by Wood's line. Can non and rifle plowed their ranks, and the southern slope of Horseshoe ridge became another shambles like the ter race In front of the stone wall at Fred ericksburg. The "river of blood" was rechristened. But the Confederate lines were endless, their battalions iu hauslible. They passed beyond Wood's flank ad stormed Snodgrass hill, squarely in the rear of Thomas' line at the breastworks, and captured his headquarters. It . was past midday when Longstreet's men at last came to a halt on the crest of Horseshoe ridge. The Confederate line now described three-quarters of a circle. Thomas was almost surrounded. Aids were still out hunting for the displaced bri gades of Sheridan. Fortunately at this time the Confederates made a fresh charge on Thomas north front and were repulsed with awful slaugh ter. Not knowing how near the victory was, these beaten troops fell back and gave up to Thomas the road to Chicka mauga. Three Federal brigades rush ed at double quick from the left to the right less than a mile apart, ready to meet any fresh outbreak of Longstreet. The last card In Thomas' hand had been played. She thought she heard a rus tling noise just as she was dozing off. It brought her to her wideawake senses at once. She arose softly and went into the hall. On the floor below she saw a light She slipped back and got a revolver. It was loaded too. So, after all, it seems, the objection to women immigration inspectors at New York was not that they were un able to climb ships' ladders, as alleged by the male political tootors who want ed everything for themselves. After the immigration commissioner had suc ceeded In working the women out, pressure was brought to bear ou him, so it is said, from a quarter where there Is a sense of Justice and decent courtesy, and after some squabbling and quibbling, the latter evidently to save official dignity, women were put back in the Immigration inspection service, actually to board ships as though there had never been a doubt of their ability to do so. But they are no more called "inspectors," look you. That is a title only to be appropriated by the trousered, voting sex. Now the women who go down the harbor and board the ships are to be called only humble "matrons" and their office is no longer to "inspect" women immigrants lauding as strangers in the ravening wilderness of New York, but only to "guide and protect." Dear, dear! Who would not be a man and be endowed with the noble masculine reasoning power? 5 If you will notice, these two phases of thought run together in the old fogy mind opposition to woman suffrage and opposition to feminine athletic culture. Wherever a blind, antedilu vian old fogy froths at the mouth and rails against equal rights you will find that this antediluvian grandmother of the male sex inveighs also against woman riding the bicycle. It never fails. t at Wherever a minister sets himself against full citizens' rights for woman he sets himself against the very foun dations of Christianity, in which there Is neither sex nor race, and in so far is a stumbling block to religion itself.
