Hillsboro Recorder. PCBUSHO ST C E. PARISH I m kMi c.f : N. STRUOWICK. 3U THURSDAY, - - SEPT. 6, 1887. FOK TBI BBC0BDKR.1 What The Hillsboro Eecordet brings to Mind. I bave read two coies of the Re corder.'' I suppose each of the cievrr editors nent a sample. "The proof of the pudding is to chew the bag." An exchange says that some old sea Captain says, "that it won't do to name vessels after women, that it is unlucky and always getting the own er into "scrapes.'' We bet a rottou apple that that old Captain is a crusty eld batchelor who was kicked years ag by some pretty girl and has beat shy of women ever sine. ; An exchange says: That J. B. Ab-1 bott of Haverhill, Mass. shot and kill- i ed his daughter Mrs Mamie Com mings and then killed himself, that be was drunk. Yes, be might bave been drunk when he killed his daughter, but not drank when be killed him self, for that was a sensible act. The newspapers say that Mrs. Cleveland drinks no wine at dinner but drinks ouly apolinaris water. We don't know what that is, but if it is as good as our town pomp water here, then Mrs. Cleveland is a lady of su perior taste. Proceeingt of the Co. Commissioners. Board net this day Oct. 3rd 1887. The New York Democratio Con vention heartily and unanimously on dorsei Mr. Cleveland and his admin istration, and the "Recorder" believes that in Nov. 1888 her people will give an overwhelming majority for President. We see from the "News and Obser ver that the -Wild man" is cresting some excitement to around Raleigh. Mr. W. B Terry saw and shot at biro several nights ago, his dog gave bim cbace and the wild man killed Mr. Ferry's dog. The "Recorder" brings to mind ma ny of the old we once knew and read about in i's column, now neurly a quarter of a century ago During the drkdayaof the war, it told of the battles end the valor displayed by the boys i'l grav. Well d 1 remember old Mr. Hearit, the editor ami piat master. And though I have grown bald since, it seeins but yetttertlay, since I swapped my forty swamp dol lars to him for thin pasters. 1 here was old. Col. Latimer, around whose fire and in whose porch I waited, waited and wairinl, for court to ad jouru that we might go home. Long were those hours as I ncollect them to-dny. Though ouly a child the old Col. was always courteous and kind. and ottcu entertained me with won derlul stories which time has failed to erase. Iu that day was Dr. bumuud S uod wick, the'peer of any phsiciun of his time, one of the foi'uders of, and but for whose wise counsel would have perikhed in ii infancy the State Med Society, which every physician in the State is now so proud to honor end name. I remember distinctly his care and his youthful likti steps; and although he has long since pikaaed a way, it is p!eaant to remember him yet. In the Court room I was per mitted to stand npou the wiudow sill to enable me to see the lawyers, most prominent among them, we imagine now that we can see the noble face and pleasant countenance of Gov. W. A. tJraham, the presence of whose name as we read it upon the pages of the history of onr country tills ns with admiration for the great statcsnnu and wise counselor. Recently we had a long talk with Cel. John D. Whit ford of Newbern, and of refugee noto riety in IlilUboro, about Hillsboro find ita good old people, and great men Col. Whiiford is well remembered by many or the best people iu Hillsboto to day. His pony was a constant vi sitorto Col. Latimer's and led 011 stake oats in the sharp corner of the Col's, triangular back yard. He was com mon property with Col. Whil ford's friends and many a time did ho crry II the brethereu borne before lie wa oubribled tr his supper. The Col. is ageutleman of the old school; and though ripening iu years has lost none of his delineation powers, end is therefore very entertaining with Us thrilling naratbuaof HilUboro iu the long sgo. The Col is now in the em ploy of Uncle Sam, He is chief engi nner of the works, that ars drodgiug Cootentrea creek. L-t I may bur den you with my reuiiuUoences, 1 close. Wishing a long and ae!nl c re-r yet for the worthy editors of the "Recorder." ToV Joed ah. Hookerton, Sept 27. The Koney Value of a Wife. An Exchange says: Let a man be come a widower, and he soon learns what the fluaucial worth of a wife wan to Urn. Old Papers. TJmler the above heud wa see iu the Daily llorhet of Charlotte that the editor of that paper baa a copy of the Catawba Journal of the date of 2Clh Feb. 1828. The "Hornet gives some very interest rug statutics from it i ' The Hillsboro Rmdr, however is a long way ahead in the matter of Newipuper re lictu. We have on onr table, which Mr. C. S. Cooley lias kiudly buuded us the North Carolina Journal piiuted at 'Halifax bj Abrahitnj Hodge, joint printer to the State with H. Wills. Monday 19th January 1795. One Bide of this lit tie paper is taken up with the proceedings of Cougress of the 22 Dee. 1701. The house was in Committee of the whole on the Naturalisation bill Mr. Cobb in the ehair. Speeches were made by Mr. Giles, Mr. Tracy, Mr. Seugewick and oth ers. Theae speeches are able and sound doctriue for the present dny. We are now reaping soma of the hoirors of immigration which tun then predicted .by those inou. Kewtipapttr were eertaiuly few in num ber and wide apart iu that day.
