Charlotte News z Dr. Montrose, the Congregationalism preacher v who made a Democratic speech at Sea qersville lastFriday night, is very much disturbed over the reports that have been circulated that he was drunk, on the occasion In question. The truth is that the Doc is a crip pie. One of his 1 egs - is aboat two fathoms shorter than the other, and he couldn't have mounted the stump, from which the speakers orated that night, without assistance. The boys simply lifted him up until the foot of his long leg got a place on the stump, Durham Globe-. Trinity College has just been the recipient ef a hand some gift from Market Street Sunday School of Greensboro in the shape of a very line portrait of Rev; J. E. Mann, D, D.. a former trustee of the colleee. Everything at the col lege is being put in readiness for the dedication Wednesday. Dr. F. L Beid, who did so much towards rais ing money to furnish the. several buildings, spent two days here this week; and the result is two elegantly appointed parlors, one in : the main building and the other in the college inn, parlors in keeping, with the handsome exteriors and such as a great institution, like new Trinity, mutt have in order to be complete. ! Oysters have not been coming into our market as plentiful' as they should thus late in the season. Fine ones in the shell command $1 per bushel, and opened ones have not sold for less than 75 cents per gallon. We see that at Beaufort hucksters are delivering them in any part of the town at 10 cents per quart. The Atlantis Baptist Association are going to have a fine meeting. A very good delegation, about twenty gentlemen and five ladies, arrived on last night's train to attend it. Among the number were Rev. G. E. Tay lor, D D., President of Wake Forn est College; President J. B. Brewer, of Murfreesboro Female College, &c. Mr. D. C, Simpkins showed us yesterday the finest bunch of pearB we eyer saw or ever expect to see. There were seventeen i on one rbunch and the little twigs making out from within a space of 18 inches. It was almost a solid block of pears. There were at first four others on the branch then we doubt not it was a solid block indeed. The weight of the twentyone pears was twentytwo pounds. They were grown by Mr. Elijah Davis, of Smyrna, on a . seven year old tree purchased from the nursery of A. D. Pratt which Mr. Simpkins and his brother represent. The tree was estimated to have borne 700 of the pears this season. They are of the Duchess De Angouleme variety. Charlotte Observer: Yesterday morning Mr. A. A. The Times is as much in favor of reform as any paper or any individ ual.lt has advocated reform and lead the way to bring it about.
