The arrival of the woman police officer is a striking commentary upon the changed conditions of our day. says Mrs. Alice S. Wells, a member of the Los Angeles police force. Out of the many which might bu named two generally inclusive reasons for the woman police officer center our attention: First.-The police department is the great peace army. Its province is to keep the peace and to prevent crime through maintaining law and order. j During the last twenty-five years an 1 active spirit of prevention has mani- > fested itself in every line of human 1 activity, a spirit based, no doubt, upon the deepest promptings—the quicken ing sense of brotherhood, of mutual re sponsibility. and the very, self preser vation of the race under our increasing Photo by American Press Association. CHICAGO POLICEWOMAN IN UNIFORM. social complications. The woman offi cer is an emphasis upon the prevention spirit of police work. Second.—Today men. women and children face together industrial vicis situdes and socially commingle. There fore it now requires the best that both men and women can give, in the police department as elsewhere, to adequately meet the needs and properly handle men, women and children. So, then the woman’s work concerns itself most ly with women and children. Coming naturally under the domain of the woman officer are the places of amusement where the young gather- dance halls, skating rinksApicture shows, penny arcades, amusement parks, etc. Whenever it is necessary to make an arrest the woman officer can make it and carry the case through the court just as her brother officer would. The proprietors are property owners, have interests at stake, and there would be no gain by resisting or refusing to appear upon summons. THE TRUE BOOSTER. If you like the old town best Tell ’em so. If you’d have her lead the rest Help her grow. When there’s anything to do Let the fellows count on you. You’ll feel bully when it’s through, Don’t you know. If you want to make a hit Get a name. If the other fellow’s it Who’s to blame? Spend your money In the town Where you pull the shekels down. Give the mail concern a frown. That’s the game! If you’re used to giving knocks Change your style. Throw bouquets instead of rocks For awhile. Let the other fellow roast. Shun him as-you would a ghost. Meet his hammer with a boast And a smile. When a stranger from afar Comes along Tell him who and what we are. Make it strong. Needn’t flatter; never bluff. Tell the truth,.for that's enough. Join the boosters. They’re the stuff. We belong. ••Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce Bulle tin IL J. Gas Water Heater in the basement/without any attention save the turn of a faucet, supplying you with unlimited, inexpensive, pure hot water. Unlimited because the water runs piping hot as long as the faucet remains open— the laundry and bath supplied at the same time. Inexpensive because the Ruud is self-operating and burns gas only while you are drawing hot water. Pure because the water is heated as it passes through the long copper heating coils direct from the water main. Think of the Modern Gas Range, especially equipped for- any mode of cooking, heat easily regulated to a “just right” temperature, no dirt, no ashes, no excessive labor, and all this comfort and convenience at a low cost for gas. PREPARATION FOR PNEUMONIA Fine Jewelry, Diamonds, Watches and Silverware Repair Work a Specialty. 113 and 115 South Main Street. Salisbury, N. C. A formula which was obtained from an Indian Doctor by an old gentleman in the year 1872 when in the coal fields of West Virginia, when at that time Pneumonia was raging to such an extent that the doctors were losing patient after patient. When this Indian Doctor asked the permission to use his remedy, with the agreement that if he did not cure them he would not charge them one cent. This permission was granted on these terms. And he went to work, and the result was that he cured every case that the doctors had given up to die. This old gentleman has made and used this remedy in his community ever since, curing nearly every one that he got to before they were too near gone to use the remedy. And the old gentleman, getting too old to do much with it, sold it to R. M. Leonard in 1909, and he is the sole owner and manufacturer of this Great Remedy, and is now put ting it on the market at a small cost for such a Remedy, as he feels that it will be a great blessing to the public to get such a remedy as this for the dreaded disease of pneumonia. Since put ting this remedy on the market we have had many cures to our credit for Pneumonia,, Croup, Colds, Sore Throat, Burns, Old Sores, etc. DIRECTIONS.
