The weather is entirely too warm for indulgence in some of the talk that is being "handed out" in the gubernational con test. Remember that Kitichin, Craig and Home are all three, good men —gentlemen and what is better, christians. Farther more remember, heated Demo crat, that you may have to vote for the very man whom you are denouncing as a skin-flint, a "demagogue" or a ringster. Keep Cool, A Citizens Meeting. On last Thursday night a large number of the citizens of our city met at the City Hall and discus sed the organizing of a Chamber of commerce or a Board of Trade. M. H. Groves introduced J. S. Kuykendall, the Secretary of the chamber of Commerce of Greens boro. Mr. Kuykendall made a very interesting talk, after which there was no doubt by any one present that an organization of this kind would bring us all to gether in such a way that we can do a great work towards the up building of our city. J. W. Blackwelder was made temporary chairman and M. H. Groves Temporary secretary. ' The chairman appointed a committee of five, Dr. W. B. Ramsay, M, H. Groves, J. F. Abernethy, J. L. Cilley and C. C, Bost to solicit members. The members will meet on Tuesday night, June the 9th. at the City Hall and elect a board of Directors ancTofficers, This is an organization which should have the hearty co-opera tion of every enterprising citizen of Hickory, The committee report that they are having no trouble in securing members, and as the organization depends to a great extent on the number of mem bers, and the interest they may show in this important enter prise will to an extent.determine the prog ress and the upbuilding of our beautiful city, Democratic Convention. The Democratic convention for Caldwell County met in the court house at 11 a. m. Monday and nominated the following candid dates: For the Legislature—L. H. Tut tle of Gamewell. For Sheriff —J. A. Triplett of Lenoir. Register of deeds—W. L. Greer of near Le noir. For Treraurer —J. H. Abernthy of Granite Falls. Coro ner—Otis Teague. County Sur veyor— W. H. Hartley of Hud son. For County Commissioners —G. R. Clarke, J. P. Blair, J. S. Jarvis. J. V. McCall was endorsed for the Senate in this disrrict. The convention was very har moneous, the different candi dates taking their defeat in good humor. The convention has put out good men and if the Republicans beat them they will have to hus tle.—News. Tony Sherrill, of Lenoir was here Monday Mr. Sherrill says they are proud of the majority given by Caldwell county for prohibition, and they are going to roll up a good majority for Democracy this Fall. s&i f gif^ir I 5! s "g g * "f aiKfeSSSfeSSlKSwog 3!W3 g, | cg®S§ "WX | £■ ♦- 1 £ CA OJ AOJQH " -^P | gS § «oo W ||| a 3\ 0 • 05 - £ saiauQ |a.« 5° £3 -——— ■ ft S ££&§ § qq°or§g> © M ' p 5 g mm -4 UEOldum 5? 3 .->» fc- - 2-^5. ° ® itujano ™ (f) n m to i- ii; j "hs § to © ■, Oi o 1 © r* g- to SSSor S3 "opuog - s§ ? "After doctoring 15 years for chronic indigestion, and spending over two hun dred dollars, nothing has done me as much good as Dr. King's New Life pills. I consider them the best pills ever sold;" writes B. F. Ayscue of In gleside, N. C. Sold under guarantee at C. M. Shuford, W. S. Martin and Men zies DRUO CO. Letter From Rusticus. Correspondence to The Democrat. Uncle Rusticus has a great deal to say since the prohibition is over. This election tried some men's soulr when they appeared at the ballot box.—There was one noted thing happened in this township on the day of election. Little children were standing on the porch at tfte public roadside and when any voter came along they would cry out "Hurrah for Prohibition," which had some influence we suppose. One voter that had been reported was op posed prohibition and when he reached the polls his conscience would not let him vote against it and so he did not vote anyway but returned home we think rather hacked by these little children. The people feel jubi lant of prohibition's great vic tory and feel that king alcohol will be forever banished from the old North State. There is nothing new of any importance in this vicinity just now. The farmers are very busy with their farm work and cotton chopping is now the order of the day. Cqrn looks well. Wheat is doing well. Rusticus has been feasting on green apple pies from his own' orchard. The work hands are now put ting the new iron bridge across Jacob's Fork river near the old Ramsour bridge which will be completed this week. It's an ex celent job. The people of this vicinity can be proud of it. Dan iel M. Yoder an old aged man over 86 years old died a few days ago. His children are all living and all his grand children but one. He was a devoted soldier during the late war. His position was to make saltpeter. He be longed to Capt. L. R. Abernethy's company and was under Col. M. L. McCorkle and was at Salis bury when it was taken by Stoneman though he had left be fore the capture, by the morning train for Hickory. The next big thing or. hand will be the State Convention that will settle the die for Home's aspirants If Craig will not get the nomination on the third or fourth ballot it will be hard telling where the die will fall. Its our opinion then the fight will be between the east and west for Craig or Kitchin or Home. Now mark this predic tion. We wish the Democrat a grand and noble success through the campaign. Mrs. ( S L. Bowen of Wayne W. Va, WTires: "I was a sufferer from kidney disease so that at times I could not get out of ded snd when i did I could not stand straight. I took Fofey's Kidney Remedy. One dollar bottle and part of the s econd cured mo entirely." Fofey's Kidney Remedy works wonders where others are a total failure. W. S. Martin & Co.
