Thursday, October 14, 1915 THE WAR SITUATION. The invasion of Serbia by the Central powers has added a new phase to the war situation in Eu rope and may have as the cut come a new war center, which might be the deciding point in the war. The allies have landed troops at Salonica in Greece and are rushing to the aid of Serbia. The Balkan States have long been a sore spot on the map of Europe and developments at this part of the continent will be awaited with interest. Some paper asked when the war would end and the News & Observer answered quickly, "when it stops," which we are bound to admit is correct without beir.g exact, but in our opinion the end is not in sight until more than one of the nations involved are crushed and bankrupted Going a long way round but getting there just the same is well illustrated in the following. A woman is said to nave had in serted in a certain paper: "Being aware that it is indelicate to ad vertise for a husband. I refrain from doing so; but if any gentle man should be inclined to adver tise for a wife I will answer it without delay." When cotton was six cents a pound the Republicans were loud in proclaiming the Dlame on Wil son and the Democratic party. Now we want to hear them give the same president and party credit for 12 cent staple. But will we? The fellow who warned against kissing a woman, saying that if you didn't catch consumption you would get married, which is just as bad, evidently had neith er brains or heart. You won't need so much money to come to Hickory for the fair. The railroads will giye rednced rates. Hickory's a mighty fine place to come to. President Wilson has declared himself personally in favor of woman suffrage. Guess cupid inspired him. "Been too busy to write," is too often an excuse for "Didn't care to write." Sad Spectacles. The poor drunkard whe delib erately drows his soul in the intoxicating cup, and destroys his house and home and dis graces his poor wife and "chil dren. The poor gambler plavs a game which costs him his character, his credit, his peace and his soul at last. It.is a game in which every thing is lost for time and eterni ty. But perhaps the poor money loyer is more to be pitied than either the drunkard or the gamb ler. The cup of inebriate gives momentary pleasure, and the game of the gambler gives ex citement for a season, but the greed of gold has no such com pensation. It is a low, base ambition to hoard without any compensating enjoyment. No wonder God' 3 curse rests on the covetous man, and shuts him out of heaven with drunk ards and infidels. Ars you covetous? "How much owest thou unto my Lord?" All your possessions are his goads and you must|give a strict account to their use.- Are you ready? Remember the fate of the man who did not use his talents for his master.—Ex. Woman loves a clear, rosy complex ion. The Nashville Christian Advo cate published a statement of some fruits of the south. It follows: "Of scientists, who rank above Audubon, LeConte, and Maury? The latter is called by onethe greatest of Americans, honored by every country save his own. "A Southern doctor first used chloroform; a Southern doctor founded the New York Poly clinic; A South Carolina doctor, Marion Sims, built the first wo man's hospital; a Southern doc tor (McGuire of Virginia) first proposed that doctors be regard ed as non-beiiigerents, free to erve the wounded on both sides, forerunner of the Red Cross doctor of today. Dr. Kinlck of Charleston, in 1862 opened the abdomen of a wounded Confed erate soldier removed the trou i la; the patient recovered. The account is buried in a medical history of the war and is "seen only by an occasional student. Twenty-one years later the same operation was performed by a Swiss doctor, a few months later still by a New York doctor, and heralded to the world. "The first sewing machine, cotton gin, and steamboat be longed to the South, the first railroad to South Carolina, yet Southerners were said to be impractical and unbusiness like, The first ironclad battle ship was a Southern invention and was used by Confeder ates. The first submarine tor pedo boat, the first ironclad bat teries, floating stationary, were built and used in the defense of Charleston harbor. The ill-fated United States submarine recalls the brave men of the David who blew up the Hooeatanic and were never seen again, their fate not being known until after the war. Could you teach the youth of do-day finer things. Ciaremont College. The general public and citi zens of Hickory will be pleased to know that this Institution is in successful operation, and a good number of students, board ing and local, are already en rolled. The enrollment is increas ing every week. Last week sev en new ones were enrolled, four boarding and three local. Several new departments have been added, Normal bookkeeping, shorthand and Primary. Each of these in operation and growing. The L-terary course has been strengthened and otherwise im proved, The Art department is a splendid one, and new pupiis are enrolling each week. The Music and Expression de partment are likewise growing as they deserve to do. It is the'purpose'ofj Dr. Lyer ly and his complete and thorough corps of teachers to make Ciare mont College what it should be, and an institution of which Hickory and North Carolina should be proud. Those desiring regular or spe cial worklwill do well to make further inquiries of the manage ment. Work for Greater Ciaremont College, Not Paint. The worst mistake in painting is not putting off. That cost 3 about 10 per-cent; you keep your money a year and pay 10 per cent for it. Paint would have to come down 25 per cent to make 10 per cent on the job, for wages do nDt go down. The worst mistake is "cheap" paint. It costs from 50 per cent to 100, first cost, and another in wear. What a liar ; cheap" is! "Pest off" is bad enough; "cheap" is ten times worse. This is in accordance with the com pany's policy of financial expan sion and constructive exten sion announced some weeks ago. An announcement by S. D. Warfield; chairman of the board, says the consolidated company, is to be known as the Seaboard Air Line Railway company, is to have an authorized capital stock of $100,000,000, the Same amount as was authorized by the present company, divided into one million share:?, par value SIOO, of which there will be issued $27,280,000 preferred shares and $40,041,000 common shares. President Wilson will vote for the woman's suffrage state con ditional amendment in New Jer sey, his home State, in the spec ial election October 19. He said he would vote, not as the leader of the Democratic party, but as a Drivate citizen. Mr. Wilson said he believed the question should not be de cided as a party issue, but by the Scates. The following state* msr.t was given out at the White Kouse: "I intend to vote for woman's t uffrage in New Jersey because I believe the time has come to extend that privilege and re sponsibility to the women of the State, but I shall voce not as the leader of my party in the nation but only upon my private con viction as a citizen of New Jer sey called upon by the legislature to express his conviction att he polls. I think New Jersey would be greatly benefited by the change. "My position as to the way this great question should be handled is well known, I be lieve it should be settled by the State and not by the national government and that under no circumstances should it be made a party question; and my view has grown stronger at every period of the agitation." Here is iust about what one little fellow can destroy in one year: 200 pounds of flour. 1 sack of salt, 200 pounds of sugar. 75 gallons of milk. 30 dczen eggs. 50 pounds of peas or beans. 100 pounds of meats of various kinds. 2 sacks of meal and grits. 12 gallons of syrup. 25 pounds of butter. And apples, peaches, water melons, grapes, tomatoes, pota toes, (both sweet and irish) and all other kinds of good things, to any quantity offered. Correct Answer A teacher was explaining to her pupils in the primary class the difference between civilized and uncivilized races, insisting upon the three things as requisi tes for civilization—food, cloth ing and shelter. The following day she re sumed her subject, byway of review. "What are the three things necessary to a civilized man?" she asked. Several of the children re membered food and clothing, but the third requisite seemed to have entirely escaped their rec olection. Finally, after the ques tion had been repeated two or three times, one of the boys, the largest one in the class, raised his hand triumphantly, "Well, James, you may tell us, "A wife."—Albany Pres?. We are, however, confident of our inability to reduce costs for several months, and therefore can offer no profit-sharing for cars delivered during August, September and October, 1915.
