The Reps, and Pops, have but one object in view in fusion, and that is to heat the Democrats. 1 oor deluded SouIh ! It is astonishing to us why Iieps. and Pops, should harp so "oon a free ballot and fair count in, N. 0., when no sane man expects a"v thing else. Capt. E. W. The illustrations are lirst-ciass. Jim Childs, colored, is now behind the bars for carving up Bob Ilouk, white. Honk, it seems, had a little too much corn juice in him and Childs, a noted bad character, was in the same predicament. Ilouk's wounds are painfi, but not serious. A fearful cyclone swept over portions of Iowa, Minnesota and Wisconsin Friday, night, doing vast damage to property and de stroying many lives. The tornado came without warning, sweeping everything from its path. Ninety six persons are reported killed and seventy -lour seriously injured. Several towns were demolished. Ex. V V WVCK IIOKE. Sept. 19th, ls'OL Sec'y. Wreck u tin- O. C?. Bt'Hf'road Fngfur pr, J ' MiKeuliofm er'K leg ltrokeu. On Wednesday morning as the Carolina Central Mad train was pulling out from Charlotte a serious wreck took place at the switch of the old Smelting works near Biddly University. The switch has not been used for a long while. Some infamous scoundrel broke the rod that held the track in place, and had there not been a curve in the track at that point probably the train would have passed over in safity. The engine was thrown from the track and turned over on one side. Engin eer Misenheimer stood to his post and went down with the engine. One of his lei: was oroken and that was all the serious damage dond to tho human kind. We have not been able to get a full account of t he wreck as there haye been no mails on that road since its occurrence. . A collar of hemn is the best thing that could be worn by the man who has so little re gard for the .lives ot his fellows ; id we sincerely hope that a clue to his identity may be had at no aisiant uav, ana that inst. mav have full swav. The colored people of .our town were honored, on Monday, with a visit from Professors Prid ami Berry. The foimeris Professor of Mathematics in Bidder University at Charlottee, N. C. They visited Fal'ston and he..t there a Sabbath School Teacher's Insti tute; and on their return to Char lotte stopped over night, and ave the young people of our town a good lecture on the importance of education and other th'ngs of in terest to them. All were highly pleased with them, in their re marks, which we trust may be profitable to all who nard them. Our people need ea- juragment in that direction. They left this morning much pleased with their visit among their friends, ot Lin col ton, and w'll, I trust be glad to visit our town again in future. Henry Taylor. TheJLaull' V lirieml.
