c. GOFFEE CODNERED Representative Norris Makes the Charge—Wants Investigation. With the charge that the world’s coffee supply has fallen into the control of a huge international trust; that priccs have been unconscionably increased in th« last few months; that the trust is 80 powerful that no ordinary means will reach it; that American interests are untimatelv involved m its conduct; and that the United States is the chief victim of its operations, Repreresenta- tive George W. Norris, of Nebraska, Thursday in croduced resolutions calling on the state department and the attorney general to inform congress what can be done to relieve the people «f this country. In the last four months coffee prices have been advanced tu an extent which involves an annual tax on the American public of many millions of dollars. Moreover, the advance has been largest in the cheaper grades, used by the people of limited means. Coffee dealers say that in the period indicated, recail prices have gone up so that coffee formerly sold at 15 cents now commands 20 cents per pound; that which formerly brought 16 now sells for 22; the 18 cent coffee of three months ago now sells at 24 cents, and coffee which formerly sold at 28 now sellit from SO to 32. Attacks School Principal.^; A severe attack on school principal, Chas. 6. Allen, of Sylvania, Ga., is thus told by him. “For more than three years,’' he writes, “I suffered ndescribable torture from rheumatinm, liver and stomach trouble and diseased kidneys. All^remedies failed till I used Electric Bitters, but four bottles of this wonderful remedy cured me completely.” Such results are common. Thousands bless them for curing stomach trouble, female complaints, kidney disorders, biliousness, and for new health and vigor. Try them. Only 50c at Mebane Drug Co. Haiti’s Tree of Liberty. (From the London Globe.) In front of the presidential residence in Haiti is a giant cocoanut tree, but its leaves are always in the same conditions. In storm or sunshine their serenity is never disturbed. The tree is the republic’s tree of liberty. When the republic was established it was thought that a tree should be planted to signalize so great an event, but Haiti, it seems, has but one tree, and that the cocoanut tree. Bat the cocoa- nut tree is hardly the species to be chosen for a tree of liberty, tor it grows to a good height and becomes bare as its age increases. How was the difficulty to be overcome? It was a very simple matter. One of the coun cil suggested that an imitation cocoa- nut tree made of zinc should be order ed from London, with leaves, etc., painted to represent nature The idea was adopted. He Died Poor. A heart filled with boundless charity for all humanity was stilled forever when death called Archbishop Ryan from his place as head of the Catholic diocese of Philadelphia. The recipient of more than $1,500,000 during his incumbency of his high office, he left just $4,031 of a personal estate; the balance had been bestowed in help ing the needy of all classes and creeds. The orphans in the various institutions of his faith were his special care, and hundreds of thousands of dollars were given from his personal estate for the support and comforting of the little ones he loved so tenderly. The lame, the halt, the blind, the needy and suffering found a friend and consoler in this great-hearted church man, and he never held his band to inquire what the creed of the petitioner waa. When, in 1903, he had rounded out half a century in the priesthood, a purse of $200,000 wa« presented to him by the people of his diocese, and he at once gave every dollar of it to building and equipping a modern home for orphans. This has been his chief concern ever since, and from his own purse he has supplied all things needed to make it a real home for the waifs it shelters. His donations to this cause are stated to have been more than double the original g^ft.—Nashville Tennessean, When you have rheumatism in your foot or instep apply Chamberlain’s Liniment and you will get quick relief. What does count ib the fact that the running expenses of a vessel sailing under American flag are about onethird more than thos'? of a vessel dailiiur under a foreign flag.—Phil adelphia inquirer. If this be fact, and it is generally conceded that it is- obviously the one way to promote American shipping is to minimize, and, if possible, to »*limi- nate altogether, the causes of this handicap, chief of which is an iniqui tous tariff policy that largely enhances the prices of supplies and all such like that enter into the cost of operation. If the inquirer and subsidy-mongers of its kind and class would devote to securing a reduction of impost sche dules to a revenue basis one-half the energy now directed to an attempt to looting the public freasury, a consum mation so devoutly to be wished would soon be effected. If free ships and freer trade relations with the outside world do not avail to rehftbiletat© the American deep-sea merchant marine, nothing elsewilL Certainly, subsidies would not and could not.—Va Pilot. CH>codile Teaf^. It is touching to observe the sym pathy that the protected Trusts exhibit for the fai*mer whenever a prospect looms tip of looping off some predatory tentacle from the tariff octopus. The meat combine has been fleecing the cattle growers to the skin f >r thirty years^ but is now sobbing its tender heart out in fear that reciprocity with Canada fhould ruin the Texas grazers. So the Harvester Trust wails and gnashes its teeth lest the grangers take harm by the admission of a few thousand beeves from Canada to the markets of the United States, yet this same corporation will today sell a reaping machine to the Argentine p’anter, after paying o'^ean freight and port charges, forty per cent cheaper than the same implement can be bought by an Illinois tiller of the soil at the door of the Chicago factory.— Va. On the eve of an election which gaye promise of a third endorsement of -his official life, Thomas Eklgar Stripling, husband and father of ten children, and who for five years hai been chief of police of Danville under the name of R. E. Morris, was arrested in his office late Thursday afternoon as an escaped murderer from the Hamilton, Harris county, Ga., prison. When the requisition papers were read to hini and exposure was certain. Stripling held a cool nerve and without the least outward show of emotion, made a full confession of the crime, which he maintains was in defense of a sister’s honor. The return joarney to Atlanta in cus tody of two officers was began at mid night. The scene as Morris bid fare well to his wife and children and hundreds of friends was pathetic, even more than one could imagine without witnessing the incident. It was a scene such as few people are eyer called upon to witness, and Morris passed through it as he nas the 15 years since he renounced the name Stripling-fearlessly and without'emotion Previously, at his home, when he was allowed to spend two hours with his samily, he wept copiously. It was an unplesant duty, waa the only statement officers who formed the guard for this gathering of grief would make. Kills A Murderer. HADLEY, OPTOM CTRIST Eyes, Examined and glasses fitted. Unmindful of Jewels and Coin. (Christian Herald.) Death is at his old game, spoiling the plans of the living. Outside the walls of Pompei the other day a pet rified woman was found with her hands full of jewels. She was running to escape the eruption of the volcano and was caught under the ashes and lava. In her ktone fingers were bracelets, necklaces, rings and two earrings con taining each twenty-one perfect pearls, set in gold, representing a bunch of grapes. The woman was doubtless a person of intelligence, culture and wealth, but death did not care for her jewels, and tripped her when she tried to make her escape. Recently, a miser, John Cremett, seventy-eight years old, died while counting his money in his room. Mrs. Patrik McMahon, with whom |he boarded, knockad at his door to call him to luncheon, and found him sittin in his chair, dead. Upon a table drawn 1 up in front pf the chair were $3,670 in I cash and two bank books showing deposits of a considerable amount. The old man was happy at his task, but death rudely dragged him away from it. As in the centuries past, so now, death enter the palace of wealth and culture and takes the woman away trom her jewels and pleasures and confronts the rich man in his money getting and counting, leaving the coin on the table for other fingers.
