planets Larger Thdh The Sun. (From Newark News ) Astronomera have made some prog ress toward showing what is the larg est object in sight. The earth is small and the sun, 850,000 mile* in diameter, has over a million times its bulk—but the 3un 13 not one of the largest stars. In brightness Sirius is equal to forty suns. Capella to 220 Antares to 900, ^returns to 1,300 and Canopus, in the gouthern hemisphere, to 10,000 Little is known of the actual diam eter and mass of stars, but Myers has found evidence that one binary has compc*nets that are each more than 10,- 000,000 miles in diameter, with masses ten and twenty-one time that of the sun Even this is small compared with the apparent size of the nebulae. Though the computation is yery un certain, the great nebula in Orion is thought to be about 1,000 light years distant, and if so, its diameter is twenty five or thirty light years—that is the distance across this object is about seven times that of the nearest fixed star from the earth, or about the same as the distance from us of the star Vega A light year-the distance light, at ISO, 000 miles a second, travels in a year—is nearly 6,000,000,000,000 miles, so that the breadth of the great nebula is approximately 180,000,000,000,000 miles. The great nebula in Andromeda is also of inconceivable size, and may be even larger than the Orion nebula. But try to imagine an object 180 trillions of miles across! Hopkinson Smith says that Peary is a great explorer but no gentleman. I'hat observation sounds like a six-pound shot hitting a giant bell. Do you know that of all the minor ailments colds are by far the most dangerous? It jis not the cold itself that you need to fear, but the serious diseases that it often leads to. Most of these are known as germ diseases. Pneumonia and consumption are among them. Why not take Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy and cure your cold while you can? For sale by All Dealers. In urging the 'neutralization of the canal. Chairman Tawney of the Committee sn Appropriations declared that the fortification would ultimately cost $60,000,000, besides $26,000,000 a year fcr maintenance. Probably few members of the House who voted for the Administration’s policy put much faith in the official estimates of $12,000.- 000 in the total cost of fortification. In matters of this sort the Govern ment always spends more money thah was at first proposed. The item o $3,000,000 voted by the House as an initial appropriation is a relatively small sum as military expenditures go. The advocates of a fortified canal would have been glad to start with only $1,000,000, so long as they succeeded n committing the Government to their scheme. The War department is now preparing plana for a garrison of 6,000 troops to man the fortifications. This means that the next demand will be for a lage increase in the size of the army It is the same with military expen ditures everywhere; the more is spent on military preparations the more governments are called on to expend in future outlay. The first gun mounted on the Isthmus will eost some tens of thousands. It will entail the waste of many tens of millions.—New York World, Attacks School Principal. A severe attack on {school principal, Chas. B. Allen, of Sylvania, Ga., is thus told by him. “For more than three years,” he writes, “I suffered ndescribable torture from rheumatism, liver and stomach trouble and diseased kidneys. Alliremedies failed till I used Electric Bitters, but four bottles of this wonderful remedy cured me completely.” Such results are common. Thousands bless them for curing stomach trouble, female complaints, kidney disorders, biliousness, and for new health and vigor. Try them. Only 50c at Mebane Drug Co. HUnlan character does evermore publish inself. It will not be cgnceaU ed. It hates darkness,—it rushes into light. The most fugitive deed and words, the mere air of doing a thing, the intimated purpose, expresses chai- acter. If you a-t, you shdW character; if you sit still, you show it; if you sleep, you show it. You think because you have spoken nothing when others spoke, and have given no opinion on the times, on the church, on salary, on the college, on parties and persons, that your verdict is still expecting with curity as a reserved wisdom. For otherwise; your silence answers very loud. You h*'ve no oracle to utter, and your fellowmen have learned that Xou cannot help them; for oracles speak. Trying her bonnet under her chin She tied her raven ringlets in; But not alone in the silken snares Did she catch her lovely floating hair, For, tying her bonnet under her chin, Sne^ied a young man’s heart within. They were strolling together up the hill. Where the wind came blowing merry and chill; And it blew the rurls a frolicsome race All over the happy peach-coloted face. Till, scolding and laughing, she tied them in. Under hex beautiful dimpled chin. And it blew a color, bright as the bloom Of the pinkest fuchsia’s tossing plume All over the cheeks of the prettiest girl i'hat ever imprisoned a romping curl. Or., in tying her bonnet under her chin, Tied a young man’s heart within. Steeper and steeper grew the hill. Madder, merrier, chiller still The western wind blew down, and played The wildest tricks wi£h the little maid. As, tying her bonnet under her chin She tied a young man’s heart within. O western wind, do you think it was fair To play such tricks with her floating hair? To gladly, gleefuly, do your best ■ To blow her against the young man’s breast. Where he has gladly folded her in. And kissed her mouth and dimple chin? O Ellery Vand! you little thought An hour ago, when you brought This country lass to walk with you After the sun had dried the dew.
