Daughters Flay The His tory By Elson. A meeting of the executive commit tee of the Maryland Division, Unifed DaUiihters of the Confedeiary, and the board of managers of the Baltimore Chapter, United Daughters of the r'^nfaHeracv, was held at the home of ^jrs. D. Giraud Wright. 142 West Lanvale street, to take action on the use of Elison’s History in Northern and Southern schools and colleges. The following resolution, offered by Mrs D. Giraud Wright, honorary pres ident of the division and chapter, and seconded by Mrs. Thomas Baxter Gresham, was unanimously adopted: • Whereas, It has been brought to the knowledge of the Maryland Divis ion of the United Daughters of the Confederacy through a list published in the Salem (Va.) Times-Regiater, on March 9, 19H. that a book known as Elson’s “History of the United States” is ill use, not only through the North, but in schools, colleges and universi- jmber of Southern States, Maryland, said list purport- .Muate from the MacMillan puoiishera of hooks: .IS, This abominable publica ns.. '• gross calumniea against the Sou^^h and her institutions and misrepresentations of the causes that led to the war between the States; ami. Whereas, In this so-called history the sacred family relations four peo ple are attacked and falsified in lan- gu:>ge impossible to quote here, and the very honor of our fathers and mothers grossly impugned; therefore, be it Resolved, That the Maryland Di vision of the United Daughters of the Confederacy registers an indignant protest in the name of truth and jus tice against the use of Elson’s so-callcd history in any of the schools, colleges or universities of our land, and calls on all Confederate veterans to aid the Daughters of the Confederacy in stam ping out this vile publication and all similar ones, to the end that the youth of the country no longer be taught as facts untruths which are slanders on the fair name of the South, her iiistiutions and her people.” Midnight In The Ozarks, And yet sleepless Hiram Scranton, of BlayCity, 111., coughed and coughed. He was in the wountains on the advice of five doctors, who said he had con sumption, but found no help in the climate, and started home. Hearing of Dr. King’s New Discovery, he began to use it. “I belive it saved my life,” he writes “for it made a new man of me, so that I can now do good work again.” For all lung diseases, coughs, colds, a grippe, asthma, croup, whooping cough, hay fever, hemorrhages, hoarse ness or quinsy, its the best known remedy. Pric3 50c and $1.00. Trial bottle free. Guaranteed by Mebar.e Drug Co. Life’s Inn. The Wide World stands a-welcoming beside the sunny way, For page and squire and knight and dame to halt and ride away; And crimson sweet the roses flamed that lay upon my breast, When all the world was but an inn, and 1 a welcome guest. The knights were lion-hearted and their ladies lily fair; The silver armor glittered bright upon the roadway there. When each fair distant turning held the promise of a quest, And all the world was but an inn, and I a welcome guest. No knock was there or Misery nor step of grimy Toil, I>at bold Adventure raised the lath, his palfrey heaped with spoil; While Romance flew to hold his rein and wait on his behest. When all the world was but an inn, and I a welcome guest. And what care I that youth must fade, and love locks turn to gray? Forsooth, at every inn there lies reckoning to pay! I’ve warmed my heart beside fire, partaken of their best, When all the world was but an and I a welcome guest. So why should I complain and curse in spiteful accent shrill Because another draws his rein, my wonted place to fill? But ere Old Age the taper takes to light me to my rest. I'll draw his chair and drink his health, and make him welcome guest. —Martha Haskell Clark, in Smart Set. some their mn. NOTICE! A fine blooded Gre gorian stalion for the season of 1911. Thus may be af* counted for the fact that the annual revenues of the State have shown a deficiency as against neces sary expenditures. Nor does so low an assessK.ent furnish an attractive adver tisement for agricultural settlers from other sections. We have not the fig ures at band to show the conditions in Virginia. But if they are similar, there is need for both the lawmakers and the courts to sit up and take notice. ~Va pilot.
