A Disastrous Course. Samuel Gompers, President of the American Federation of Labor describes the arrest of John J. McNamara as “the first act of a tragedy contem plating the assassination of organized labor.” If organized labor is ever assassinated the deathblows will not be dealt by private detectives (or by the police pr by employers or by capital or by the “interests.” The blame will rest upon the labor dealei-sthat have misled labor. Mr. Gompers asserts that in the arrests for the Los Angeles murders “the whole affair smacks of well-laid prearrangement.” Frank Morrison, Secretary of the Federation, calls the arrests “an infamous outrage. ” William J, Spencer, Secretary of the Building Trades Pepartment of the Federation suggests that the incriminating dynam ite and infernal machines found by the detectives “were placed there by the ‘’"tprests.” ;ie Mr. Gompers, Mr. Morrison r Spencer were trying to sh a capitalistic conspiracy to it organized labor, the Chief of ves of the Chicago Police Depart ment was making public the conf*»asion of Ortie E. McManigal, in wluch McManigal told the details of a dozen dynamite explosions which cost 112 lives and destroyed property worth more than $3,500,000. As the despatches describe his confession, “he spoke carelessly of the crimes, telling how the explosive was ‘planted,’ how he had visited union officials and had been paid for his death-dealing work.” Mr. Gompers. Mr, Morrison and Mr. Spencer will doubtless regard this confession as a police “fake” perpe trated for the benefit of the ‘ ‘interests; but this much is certain: The explosions described by McManigal were not “fakes;” they were real. The mangled corpses were not “fakes;” they were real. The ruined properties were not “fakes;” they were real. Somebody committed these crimes. They all grew out of labor wars. They are all matters of record. The men who were killed did not destroy themselves in order to heln the “interests” discredit org>»nized labor, nor did the men whose property was wrecked wreck it them selves in order to cast reoroach upon the unions. Mr. Gompers and his associates have no words of denunciation for these infamous murders, but they are quick to protest against the arrest of men charged with having been implicated in the crimes. No more disastrous course could be followed by responsible leaders of organized labor. Nothing will do more to alienate public sympathy for organized labor and set back the clock of industrial progress.—New York World. Splendid Fishing at Beau fort and Morehead City. Beaufort, April 22nd;- Large Catch es ot Trout and Bass are being made daily in the vicinity of Beaufort and Morehead City. Beginning early in April Trout and Bass begin to run, and a record season is predicted, by the willy boatmen and guides of this vicinity. It Startled Tlie World when the astounding claims were first made for Bucklen’s Arnica Salye, but forty years of wonderful cures have proved them tme, and everywhere it is now knowj as the best salve on earth for Bunns, Boils, Scalds, Sores, Cuts, Bruises, Sprains, Swellings, Eczema, Chapped hands, Feyer Sores and Piles, Ctnly 25c at Mebane Drug Co. Microbes And Cats. (Ohio State Journal ) A Chicago man is organizing to kill off the cats. He is a doctor, and he gives as a reason for his murderoUs intent that the cats’ whiskers are the roosting places of numerous unsightly and terrifying microbes, ready to pounce upon their victim at the first chance. In order to expedite the mas sacre of the felines the doctor has in vented a sort of gibbet snap, which is said to terminate the cat in the most painless manner. The doctor is now being assailed on every side, especially by the women, who have taken the cat tribe to heart. We do not expect this man’s microbe scare will result in the death of a single cat. People are getting tired of microbe scares. There are too many of them. If they run from all the microbes that are discovered they will keep on the run. A person should know how to live—how to keep clean, pure, temperate brave, hopeful, and then snap his fingers at the microbes, especially those on the cat’s whiskers. Do Ghosts flaunt Swamps? No, Never. Its foolish to fear a fancied ®vil, when there are real and deadly perils to guard against in swamps and marshes, bayous, and lowlands. A story is Koing the rounds of the press to the effect that a man in a Georgia town, in cleaning up his back yard the other day, found a bag of gold. Whether true or not, it points a moral which ought to be generally heeded. In clean premises is to be found good health, and good health is more valuable than all the gold which is reported to lie at the rainbow’s end. A Burglar’s Awful Deed may not paralyze a home so completely as a -mother’s long illness. I surest The leading negroes of a Georgia} town started a bank and invited persons 1 of their raoe to become customers. ' One day a darkey, with shoes run down at the heels, a gallus over one shoulder and a cotton shirt, showed up at the bank. “See here,” he said, “I want mah ten dollahs." ‘•Who is yuh?” asked the cashier. “Mah name’s Jim Johnson, an’ I wants dat ten dollaha.” ‘Yuh ain’t got no money in dis here bank,” said the cashier, after lookmg over the books. “Yes, I has,” insisted the visitor, “I put ten dollahs in here six months er go.” “Why, man, yuh shure is foolish. De intrist done et dat up long er go.” —Chicago Daily Sketch. Is there anything in all this world that is of more importance to you than good digestion?
