strange Ministry to '‘A
Mind Diseased.”
It seems strange beyond belief that
iu this enlightened twentieth century
there should be found anyone who be
lieves that the depressed unfortunate
who contemplates suicide can be re
strained by legislative enactment It
is an emanation of that misguided
school of though which would make
over human nature by the multiplicity
of statutes. It belongs to that period
in the history of the criminal law when
there were 160 offenses which carried
the death penalty, includmg the cut
ting down of a cherry tree and the
theft of goods valued above 5 schillings
it harks back to the vindictive and un
sympathetic era when the suicide was
burriedatthe cross-roads, with a stake
driven through his body.—Washington

Happiest Qirl in Lincoln.
A Lincoln, Neb,, girl writes, “I had
been ailing for some time with chronic
constipation and stomach trouble. I
began taking Chamberlain’s Stomach
and Liver Tablets and in three days I
was able to be up and got better right
along. I am the proudest girl in
Lincoln to find such a good medicine”.

The World Was Flat.
If I have failtered more or less
In my great task of happiness;
If I have moved among my race
And shown no glorious morning face;
If beams from happy muman eyes
Have moved me not; if morning skies
Books and my food and summer rain
Knock on my sullen heart in vain—
Lord, Thy most pointed pleasure take
Or, Lord, if too obdudate I,
Choose Thou before that spirit die
A piercing pain a skilling sin.
And to my dead heart run them in!

The Waxhaw Enterprise hints that
the editor of the Marshville Our Home
has been considerably younger than

Possible The Observer is right. It
may be that such facta should remain
family secrets. The Enterprise now
feels remoseful over the critical situa
tion in which it has placed the bache
lor editor of Our Home, and is willing
to take back or modify what it has
said in regard to the antiquity of the
Marshville editor. We seriously doubt
his being as old as he looke.

An insect pest is reported as making
such destructive attacks upon sugar
maples in ’'^^ermont and northern
Connecticut that unless its ravages can
somehow be checked the New England
maple sugar crop will soon become a
thing of the past. This reminds us
that among the many almost wholly
unutilized resources of our North
Carolina mountains is the sugar maple
tree. Regretting New England’s
trouble, we nevertheless can see no
reason why the North Carolina moun-
tainA should not profitably help fill the
gap.—Charlotte Observer.

I tried everything, I could henr of, for
