The neccessity for some street lights in Mebane is by no means deminishing, in fact their im portance seems quite apparent to every one except those who have the power of placing them in the town. What on earth would a stranger think of Meb ane to have reached here on the two o’clock train last Wednes day night. A town of mud without a single light to guide his foot steps to any place of com fort. There is a reason why Mebane has no lights, and the reason is hardly creditable to the town. A FIRE FIGHTING FORCE. Mebane has not a single fire fighting force of any character organized in its midst. We re gret to say this, but its a fact and we stace the fact in order to call the matter to the atten tion of thoughtful citizens with the hope of in a measure remedy ing the deficiency. A bucket company would be far better than nothing, and such a com pany could be organized and maintained at nominal cost. In the event of a fire, in its incip- iency much effective help could be rendered toward extinguishing it. The young men of the town could get together and organize with but little trouble. No one with the slightest bit of inteli- gence can fail to realize the im portance of some organized fire fighting force, and a discussion of its importance ^^ould seem entirely unnessessary. The post office authorities could not have done a more sen- seable thing than to have put the ban upon the stamp the Mc Namara defense gang wanted to burden letters through the mail with. The fact of it, is in our estimation McNamara is one of the toughest cut throats the government has run up against, since it struck the Hay Market crowd in Chicago a quarter of a century ago. It will not take a hundred thousand, or two hun dred thousand dollars to famish a proper defense for McNamara and it is sincerely to be hoped he will get justice, The blowing up of the Times office at Los Angles, alleged to have been done by McNamara was as cowardly and as brutal a crime, as this country ever hears off. We believe if McNamara gets justice the law abiding people in this country will be satisfied, if McNamara friends are not. It looked much like Beattie killed his wife when the case first became public, but the de velopments for the past few days seems to throw a shadow of doubt upon the tragedy. If Henry Beattie is not the most astute liar on earth he is an in- ocent man. Unless there are other developments, there will be a mistrial, or an acquital, whether this be right or not, we do not pretend to say. The Urime of July A bale of cotton brought about $15 or $16 leas today than it would have sold f jr ten weeks ago. The price of cotton is down more responsive to what was believed about the crop in the early summer than to what is known ab6ut th6 crop in the late summer. If opinion was held by most people last June that a “bumper” crop would be hat vested that opinion was given ex aggerated emphasis by the National Department of Agriculture. When the newspaper reader observed that the Agricultural Department prohesied a crop of more than 14,000,000 bales, he leaped to the conclusion that the whole thing was settled. The average man has a superstitious respect for what “the Government” says and the opinion of the average man is public opinion. Public opinion is the chief factor influencing the price of a great commodity. It is a gfueas, but a very fair guess based on the record, that the drop in the price of cotton during the summer would have been seven or eight dollars a bale instead of twice that amount had the Department of Agriculture confined its activities within its legitimate sphere without straying into prophecy.—Col umbia State. As usually treated, a sprained ankle will disable a man for three or four weeks, but by applying Chamberlain's Liniment freely as soon as the injury is received, and observing the direction with each bottle, a cure can be effect ed in from two to four days For sale by All Dealers, The War Department has been ex perimenting with a one-pound gun which is presumably able to wing an aeroplane at an elevation of 18,000 feet, but acknowledges that the gun has not been tested on anything re motely resembling an aeroplane. Here seems to be an opportunity for some aspiring birdman to prove bis devotion to his country. Standard Oil Dissolves. The Standard Oil company, of New Jersey, the corporation which has been the storm center of anti-trust agitation throughout the country for years last Friday passed out of existence so far as its present form and functions are concerned. After this famous corpor ation will cease officially to carry on its operations as the head of a vast organition whose activities extend to almost every part of the world. Friendship Council No 51 D. Judge Clark has announced his plat form for the United States Senate and the Greensboro Record says “If he has omitted anything no one seems to be able to find it, unless it be woman suffrage. All the old planks of the old Populist platform are there in double doses, vi^e the Socialist might be able to atand by him: In the opinion of a good many of his beat friends, Judge Clark has about as much show as a man who is in his grave.” Starting out on a day’s pleasure trip seven of a party of eight men, promi nent in Toledo affairs here, were drown- Saturday when the steamer Phillip Minch ran down the launch Nemo in Maumee Bay. “I have a world of confidence in Chamberlain’s Cough Remedy for I have used it with perfect success,” writes Mrs. M. No man can serve two masters and few can master two servants. A liquid laugh is said to be less stim ulating than a liquid “smile.” The man who shoots off his mouth never runs out of ammunition. Most people make a specialty of of fering explanations that do not explain. A cynic is a man who loves the truth more than he loves popular applause. Being “popular with the boys” isn’t necessarily anything for a girl to boast of.—Chicago News. WE ARE HERE TO MAKE GOOD any thing found wanting in the pianos we sell.
