Write at ow'p. I'hursday. September 14 1911 BEATTIE TO BE ELECTRO CUTED. Henry Clay Beattie Jr. was convicted of murder in the firs degree, at Chesterfield Court House Va. last Friday evening, Beattie had been indicted fo’' the 'murder of his wile occured on the night of ,»nich day of July last w>*' ^he 18th and his ^ile Beattie iomobilatif*' ^-e taking an au- 9n^ tl>^ out from Richmond ..lidlothian turn pike. _xil of the evidence introduced at court against Beattie was cir cumstantial, but of a most con- vinceing character. While the world shares the belief that it is dangerous to depend upon cir- ccmstantial evidence to convict a man for a crime where the penality is death, yet there are many men learned in the law who regard circumstantial evi dence as better than positive proof. An unbroken chain of circumstances can not be con troverted, while positive proof from the mouths of a half a dozen eye witnesses may be so contradictory as to become en tirely unreliable and worthless. Beattie told an improbable story, but he told it in an ex ceeding plauseable manner. It was Beattie’s iron nerve and his assumed air of conscious inocen • se that won so much of public confidence, and but for his lec herous life, and his intimate as sociation with the Binford girl he might have shared to a very great extent the sympathy of many who can not share it with him as it is. Beattie has been sentenced to be electrocuted on the 24th day of November, and there exist but little if any reason to believe but what this sentence will be duly executed. His chances for a new trial or an extension of his sentence is very slender, almost hopeless. We stand aghast, terror strick en and appalled in the presen ce of the law when it pronounces its stem decree upon a human being, and says upon a certain date, and day you shall be taken from the jail in which you are confined to a place of execution where you must die, and the whole world is ready to encircle you with bayonets to- set that the laws vengeance is appeased. It is terrible words, and they have a terrible significance. It is stern justice. An eye for an eye and a tooth fora tooth was spoken in the days of old, and a life for a life is what the modern law demands. Who dares say but what this is right. If Beattie committed this crime, Beattie should atone for it, and there is no atonement that will satisfy but his life. We too soon forget the dumb lips of his dead wife, we soon loose sight of his victem whose joung and inocent life was ruth lessly taken without a moments warning, Beattie will have to die, we do not see the remotest hope for him. A BIG INCREASE. There is no boom in this coun try, in fact in many towns and cities there is a depression and yet in Mebane real property is bringing from fifty to seventy- five per cent more than it did two and a half years ago before the Leader was established here People who can appreciate the results of our efforts at other cities and towns‘are according to us a full measure of credit for our efforts in Mebanes behalf but there are those in their billious selfishness, and exas- perting jealousy who would say that the Leader had nothing to do with it, and these are the natural results. There are a crowd of fair minded people saying why in the thunder did not these natural results get a hustle on themselves during the last half century. But the Lea^ der is glad to be here to do wh** it can and while its at Editor has charge of i*' .esent what it can* ^ will do A Fatal M^take. (By Savoyard.) The Payne-Aldrich law is to tariff slavery what the Kansas-lilebraska law was ta African slavery, and the veto of the wool bill of the Sixty-second Con^ gress ia ta tariff slavery whatthe Dred- Scott decision was to African slavery? It is the most indefensible veto that ever came from b President of the Uni ted States, and so frr as I know it is the first and only veto of a tariff bill in our history. Presipent Tyler approvi ed a tariff bill to which he would not have given his vote had he been a mem ber of either house of Congress, and Presibent Cleveland refused his signat ure to a tariff bill that did not meet his ideal of tariff reform, but it became a law nevertheless, for the absence ' a veto. of JohnH.^^ — ATTORJIF'' ' ^IRNON .1 AND GOUNSLOR AT LAW Tel3phone Office No. 65 J. AND THE FUP'" .1’ CATCHER THE MASHER, xne Police of Oakland Califor nia put a flashily dressed woman on the streets of that city a few weeks past to catch the lady mashers. She did a thriving business, but upon investigation it was learned she was simply a lure to the masher, rather a temptation. The chief of police after noteing her make up or dered her to discontinue her ser vices. Now Denver Colorad has put a flirt catcher on her streets. A handsomely dressed handsome man walks the streets, and finds the womans attention to him is very anoying. Great old world ain’t it? If you have recently purchas ed a lot in Mebane build on it if it is posible, if you can not build on it try in some way and improve it. If it is not practible to do either of these, then sell it at the first opportunity, if you get only a small advance, you are making something, and do ing your town the most possible good by contributing to its life and its activity. Keep things moving and you prevent stagna tion. It is stagnation that means death. Now while the streec improve ment force are here with their machinery is the time if posible to induce the railroad people to macadmise around the reer ap proach to the freight depot. With the water damned up there as it will be in winter, it will get in a perfect quagmire. It is a central point for the con gregation of wagons and carts, and will be subject to more wear than the streets get. This is a matter of vital importance, and can not receive attention to soon. THE TELEGRAM OF GREENS BORO SOLD. The Greensboro Daily News has bought the Evening Tele gram of Greensboro absorbing its good will, subscription list, and much of its material. While it is a misfortune for the owners of the Telegram ta find business of such an unpromising charac ter as to n^ke it desirable to sell out and abandon the field, it is a naatter of congratulation ta the News people that their previous success and good for tune makes it both posible and profitable to make the deal. Our best wishes to Messrs Hil debrand and Crater, two splend- ed young men who deserve suc cess. The fight of Carter Glass of Lynchburg and William A Jones insergents against Senators Claud A Swanson and Thomas S. Martin. has been unusualy bitter, but the mach- chine Candidates so to speak has won out by not less than 20,000 majority. Senator F. M. Simmons will deliver an address at the open ing of the Alamance Agricultural Pair at Burlingron on October the 3rd. Senator Simmons will undoubtly prove a strong draw ing card for that occasion.
