Write at onf*p. fore jciven Europe has held hands off. It has been a shame and an outrage the way these converted Christians have been treated. It is to be hoped that the dismemberment, and par tition of Turkey is near at hand Llr. Taft maybe a very sincere man. but the way he has pl iyed hide and seek with the tariff question has not tended to impre ss any honest man with his since rity. His junketing tour out West is with a view of building his political fences and impres sing the people with his good purposes, but we are inclined to think he has made a poor suc cess. Mr. Taft can not pull with the stand patterns, and do the American people justice that is all there is to it. Thursday. October 5. 1911 MEBANE AS A TOBACCO MARKET. The great decline in the cotton crop prospect for a much shorter crop than the government re port for the first of August in dicated, is a befiting rebuke to that source of information when predictions are expected of a re liable character to govern pric- It would be dificult to mea- es sure Mebane’s possibilities for a tobacco market. Already it has been demonstrated that there is great things for her if her peo ple will go down for them in real earnest. Last year slie very near doubled her sales for the previous year, this year with her two warehouses she will more than double last year sales. Mebane is very advantageous- Ij Situated for the tobacco farmers living North of here to the Virginia line, and there is no reason why she can not easi - ly control the leaf tobacco sales up to that line, and the day is not far distant when she will have tobacco coming from be yond that line. Mebane to-day enjoys the friendly co-operation of a number of representative tobacco buyers. Just push, and keep pushing and it will come. The accessability of Mebane to the tobacco farmers North of here over good roads at all sea- The efforts ot the printers un ion to prevent type setting from being taught in the schools of Washington, is an other eviden ce of the tyrany of this associa tion. It is ? far fetched propo sition and one for whieh fair minded people can have no sym pathy. Teaching the elements, or the grounded princepals of any honorable profession, is something that does not belong by right to any organization, and it is an arrant assumtion for one to claim it. Barnum Circus at Greens boro Oct. 19th, and Dur ham Oct. 20th. The i'eople of Mebane and vincini^^y are to be given an opportunity of see- i ig the Barnum and Bailey Greatest Show on Earth will give two perform ances in Greensboro on October 19th and Durham October 21st. Among the more sensational num bers on the long bill are John Ducan- der’a company of bell-ringing horses, from England, the Fonelli company of Ital’an acrobats, the Siegrist-bilbon family of German aerialists, Jupiter the balloon horse, Charles the First, a j chimpanzee bycle rider and roller ska ter, the great Georgetty family of French jugglers, the Les Deko and Les Silvas family of French equili brists, Noonan's brass band of elep hants, Capt. Mebane Store, Co. Mebane, N. C. ♦ ♦ % BETTER 1^ IRE PROTECTION. There are few towns or cities perhaps none, but what could improve the efficiency of their fire protection, or lessen the danger by exercising more pre caution, when exposure is avoid able. When a town or city is swept sons, make it a selling point at | by some disasterous conflagra- once desirable. The convenien ce to the buyer for shipping is equally as attractive. Mebane is destined to be under favorable conditions a large tobacco mar ket. The wavp ol murder that is pwecping through North Carolina demands a stimulation of popular sentiment for a proper enforcement of the laws that will at least tend to minimum human destruction and bring those who violate the law against life face to face with deserved penalty. The law relies upon uoral sentiment and support to invest itself with powei and efficacy.— Char lotte Observer. When you induce our big criminal lawyers to turn to some other source for big fees ra ther than from bad criminals you will have materialy reduced the incentive for murder. The courts are responsible too. There was one Judge moralizing about the law, do vvn East a few days past who has several notches on his stick for aiding an abeting murderers to escape, that should turn his hot air to some other purpose, or perhaps he thinks the people have no memories. If the war recently declared by Italy upon Turkey shall re sult in the final disintegration and breaking up of the Ottoman Empire there will be no regrets from the Christion world, in fact it is a consumation that we sin cerely hope will be the final out come. The integrity of Turkey for centuries has only been main tained, because of the fear of a quarrel over its partition and a disastercus war in which all con tinental Europe would have been involved. In its corruption and rotteness it seems to be falling to pieces of its own weight. Its answer to Italy’s ultimatum, was an ap peal to the powers, faUing upon its back in abject helplessness and confessing its own utter weak ness For a thousand years the Turks have been the butchers of Christians in Europe in territory accessable to its domain. Otlier Christian countries have sent their missioneries +o Aj menia, Bulgaria, and other Turkish de pendences to convert the people to the Christian religion, and when a body becomes surficient- ly large to attract attention Tur key sends over her troops and t>utchers them, For reasons be- tion and its most valuable indus tries or buildings are reduced to ashes, itusualy awakens to the importance of this question, it would be wisdom however to not wait for such an expensive lesson. Why not learn from some one elses experience, it is much cheaper. No—because there may be some expense, or trouble attached to it we go on in fancied security, untill we have a rude awakening, a sad and costly experience. With a fire in most small towns, all that may be done is to sit and watch it burn. There is hardly a village anywhere but what may organize a fire fight ing force, and if it is but a buck et company it is much better than nothing. Every day that the citizens of Mebane neglects to secure better fire protection, is one more day in which they have slept upon their oppor tunity. Is The World Growing Better. Many things go to prove that it is. The way thousands are trying to help others is proof. Among them is Mrs. W W. Gould, of Pittsfield, N. H. Finding good health by taking Electric Bitters, she now advises other suffer ers, everywhere, to taKe them. “For years I suffered with stomach and kid ney trouble,” she writes. “Every medicine I used failed till I took Elec tric Bitters. But this great remedy helped me wonderfully.” They’ll help any woman. They're the best toiiif and finest liver and kidney remedy that's made. Try them. You’ll see. 50c at Mebane Drug Co. Proceeding were undertaken in the Federal court of the western district of Missouri on account of 175 crates of frozen eggs, seized from a st*rage concern. It was shown by analysis that there were present in one; cubic centimeter 150,000,000 bacteria, of the ga?-producing type. The eggs were ordered condemned and forfeited and the marshall executed the order and destroyed them. In a case of adulteration and mis branding of special wild cherry soda water flavor, so called, the Buaeau of Chemistry showed the product was composed of alcohol and benzaldehyde. The defendant, before the Federal district court in Massachusetts, pleaded I guilty and fined $25. It was shown the article contained no genuine extract of flavor of wild cherry. Dried mushreoms found in Pittsburg, decomposed, fifty, and wormy, were condemned, ordered forfeited, and were destroyed. Alleged cream waffles shipped from Holland and sent to Illinois and Penn sylvania led to prosecution in Illinois It was found the goods contained a deleterious ingredient, boric acid. The defendants in the case pleaded guilty and were And $10 and t;osts. A food product labeled “preserved peach, apple and sugar” was found to contain between 23 and 36 per cent of commercial glucose. Suit was brought in Missouri and the defendant, pleading guilty on two counts, was fined $10 on each count, totalling $20, and costs. In a number of cases goods were or dered condemnec and destroyed. Occa sionally bond is required conditional on no fcale contrary to law and the goods seized are returned. The More the Merrier. Not many young women are familiar with or cure much about the theory of germs. In fact, germs are a joke. By way of example, two charming Baltimore avenue girls were discussing germs, and laughing over the profound assertions of a physician who said that kissing is unsanitary. “Oh, think of itl A million germs in every kiss!” said one. “Deed I don’t care,” interposed the other; “the more the merrier.”—Phil adelphia Times. i/iQ ® till Copyright Hart Sciiaffher & Mars Lame back is one ol the most com mon forms of muscular rheumatism.
