Severil hundred insCc'tk were liberated in the room and all were destroyed within less than five minutes. The new meth od which consists of charging the at- iiii>splu're with an alcoholic distillation of the long leaf pine was discovered by Dr. Joseph C. Shepard of Wil mington, N. n. The demonstration was given by Dr. L. J. Morel, who is ! ?r (Shepard’s representative. Dr. Morel is in Washington with a yiew to interesting the federal and dis trict government officials in the dis covery. “After a trap contaimng several hundred flies had been opened in the lODHi, Dr. Morel dusted a small blow er for charging the atmosphere with the mixture and within a few minutes the insects began to fall to the floor lifeless and it not long until all were dead. Several water insects which had been turned loose on the floor expired in the same way. It was explained that flies breathe through the pores m their bodies and that the pine leaf product closes the pores, and thus stops respiration. Ihe printer’s devil in the otfice of the Perry County Times of Pa., has written soine yorse and has sent a copy to Senator Penrose, to whom he has dictated it. Here is the introductory stanza. OH, PROMISE ME. To be sung by the Hon. Boies Penrose under the window’^ of John D. Ar hbo'd, on a bright moo’ilight night and with accordion accompaniment. Oh, promise me, the next time you and I Shall make a little divvy on the sly. You’ll see that tnere is no one round about. So W’tllie Randolph Hearst can’t find it out, And V/hen you want to slip a wad to me We’ll go way off and hide behind a tree, So yellow journals can’t shout “bribery!” Oh, promise me! Oh, promise me! What is your reputation? A pretty smooth article aint you? A Baltimore millionaire is praying the courts to relieve him of payment of alimony to a one-time better half who is now married again. Reason, v/e are told by Coke, is thi life of the law; and it cercainly doesn’t look re asonable to compel one man to contri bute to the support of the wife of an other. FfcW, if any, medicines, have met with the uniform success that has attended the use of Chamberlain’s Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy. The remarkable cures of colic and diarrhoea which it has effected in almost every neighborhood have given it a wide reputatio.i. For sale by All Dealers $40 Per Word Conscientious statisticians have com puted that the Sixty-second Congress, just adjourned, uttered 26,000,000 words during 267 days, at a cost to the country of something more than $1,000,- 000,000. Thus it appears that our Federal lawmakers spent an average of three and three-quarter millions per diem, and that the great sea of their eloquence was poured out at the rate of $40 por word. Somehow, the only reflection which seems apposite, at first, is the self accusation of the parrot ixfterhis single round with the bull-pup. And, counting find One self-denying act, one word That eased the heart of him who heard. One glance most kind That fell like sunshine where it went. Then we may count the dav well spent. But if through all the livelong day. We’ve eased no heart by yea or nay; If through it all We’ve done no thmg that we can trace, That brought the sunshine to a face No act most small That helped some soul and nothing cost, Then count that day as worse than lost.” Selected, We would fseggest ot young parents that it is a dangerous thing to name the baby after William J.
