Anyone who has read the history of Jajan must realize how impossible it is for the western mind to understand the psychology of this, to us, strange people. There can be no analogy be tween the sentimental suicide of Gen eral Nogi and his wife and anything that could occur in Europe or America under the same inspiration that led to the death of the old soldier. Had Nogi been the Boulanger of Japan, the needlessness and theatri- calism of “the deep damnation of his taking off” would have excited derision and contempt, instead of a feeling of profound sadness. But Nogi was a genuine man and soldier, well poised and intellectually strong—therefore the last act of his life is entitled to re spectful analysis and consideration. It were easy to conclude that he was a superstitious barbarian, who commit ted felo de se in comphance with the traditions of a barbaric race. But such a conclusion is not justified by the present state of civilization of the Jap anese race. A man of his character and antecedents must have had a rea- S(>n for his act, other than the mere following of a custom hallowed by time.—Va Pilot, Over the Southern railway cn’y fn e thousand carloads of peaches have al ready been shipped this season to out side merkets. This takes no account of the large quantities sent North and West by the Seaboard and Atlantic Coast Line routes, or by the steam ships plying from Savannah to New York and Boston. The industry since specialized has proved a mine of wealth to the state, and the planters in the peach section are far more prosperous than those who follow the old folly of worshipping excluf-i v^ely at the throne of King Cotton.—Va.
