Mebane Leader Eiitor and Owne J. O. FOY, Bantered as second class matter Feb ruary 8. 1909, at the Po.t Office at Mebane, N.C.. anderthe act of March 1897- Issued Every Thursday Morning. SUBSCRiI TlON: One Year,ri- - ‘ ft’ix Months, - - * Three Months, - - ^ payable in advance Send Currency, Postal Money Order or Stamps. CORRESPONDENCE! We wish correspondents nearby post offices in »U the Write at oni»p Tursday* April 29th 1915 It is said that Mr. Daughtridge' is expecting the assistance of big polititions at Washington in his gubanatorial aspiration, we should think less of Mr Daught- rifig© captability and fitness if he gets their assistance. It don’t work with clean hands. The South should not bank too strongly upon the fact that the four million bale cotton crop of Egypt will be largely reduced this fall on account of the dis ordered conditions produced by the war. This four million bales is much of an item in the cotton supply, but it may not cut neir the figure iu the aggregate you are thinking it will. Its an encouraging sign to learn that President Wilson is studying the war maps of Europe with a view of giving intelligent aid in the event he is called up on to give council and advice in a peace conference. The sup position is that Mr. Wilson has inside information to the effect that condition are getting rip^ in Europe to consider peace, and that he would assuredly become an important^factor in bringing the powers to amicable terms and a satisfactory adjustment of their differences. Twenty million doll nr order to ft powder plant for powder indi cates big business, if n3t the character that would be helpful to us, an order for that amount of powder has be^^n given to the Hercules Powder company by a country at war in Europe. The Dupont, and the Atlas and all other powder mills are mak ing big money on the sales of powder. These people are grow ing immensely rich, but it is not helping in this section, and if you can not see the point you are dull. of the entire wealth of the i^- jtion; they produce most of her I industrial riches. Their loss has sent France into I the open market for most of her munitions of war that couM have been made in her own land; now they are supplying the German invaders with them. Seventy per cent, of all the coal mined in France is in Germanic posses sion. This sends the republic to other nations for fuel to supply her war vessels, when she might mine it at home if her subjugat- id departments were under her control now. Ninety per cent, of ail the iron produced in France is in German hands. This means that the republic is forced to spend huge sums for iron in her warfare that otherwise could be produced on her own soil. Now it goes to the Germans. The steel industry lies in back of the German trenches. Here the invaders can manufacture cannon and ammunition without having to transport it from the great Krupp factories in Essen When it is noted tiiat France stood fourth among the nations in the production of pig iron and steel, it can be readilj'^ seen what a treasure the Germans have se cured in the conquered depart ments. With these in the posses sion of the Kaiser’s minions, to gether with the iron and steel industries of Belgium in their grasp, German now controls a monopoly of the iron and steel industry of Europe, w’hich is no small item in warfare. Coal, iron, steel-these three great factors in decisive warfare are found in German possession on French soil. It means that the invaders have an opportunity to manufacture arms and amuni- tion taken from the enemy’s own workshops. It means that the French republic must spend inconceivable sums to secure the essentials that could have been obtained from their own facto ries and foundries. It means a serious financial problem for France to face It means, too, that Germany can husband her own monetary resources and utilize French industrial strength to withstand the assults of the Gallic troops. It gives Germany an advantage that is not to be de spised, and it adds one handrerd fold to the burdens of the allies in seeking to drive the Teutons from the soil of the Gallic re public and Belgium. It also means a prolongation of warfare that cannot be estimated in months, but must take years in its comprehension.—Philadelphia Press. Perhaps we should be thank ful that Italy has not offered her sword to assist the German ag gregation, as was persistently Bought in the early stages of the war„ but it is true according to our thinking that Italy has not played a very creditable part in her waiting game to try to coerce Austria into giving her certain teritory, as a price for her neutrality, by holding a standing army waiting. While if Italy must strike we would prefer her striking an Aliev of Germany, we can not view her demand in any other light than one mean and mercenary. Only all things are fair in love and war. A BITTER STORY, IF TRUE. The Philadelphia Press of Sun day in an Editorial of some length has the following to say of the French teritory held by the Germans, since their retreat from Paris. It is some-what a surprise to us. “Behind the German ar'ia.v at the present time is nearly fifty per cent, of Industrial France. The invaders have taken country populated by one-tenth of the people of France. In the terri tory held by the Germans are the mines, the factories, the foundries, the dairies and the farms which have supplied France with most of her wealth, -hey have been the especial pride of the Gallic republic; they contribute to her treasury a ma jority of the taxes raised; .they represent in value hfty per cent. The Accursing Gold By Edwin Markham. It was when Ferdinand was king In Naples, back in a little ring Of noisy years, forgot and gone, A whirl of mist across the dawn. A little legend of those years Stays to proclaim their toils and tears — One little legend that, I wit. Is in the Book of Judgment writ. And now the accusement of this nme Will cry it into the ear of Time. The king, to bind with crafty hold St. Francis of Castellamare, B'lung to the friar a purse of gold (You should have seen the courtiers stare), A thousand ducats as an alms ■ To lay within God’s empty palms But Francis, friend of man, stooped down. And snatching a coin from the impious purse (Stamped with the Prince’s royal crown, But stamped more keep with the peo ple’s curse) He bent it tiil it broke; and lo, Blood tickled out for all to know! “Take back your gold,” the friar cried “The gold t’nat props your pomp and pride, Behold the peoples blood you draw Through stealthy treasons of the lav, Tnis blood proclaims the griefs and wrongs 01 them to whom the goid belongs. Give all to them, if you would give The gold into God’s ^and live.” One View of Foreign Travel.
