A man with good sense will see in Mr. Bryants act the perfidy of a proiitical malcontent. The News will not help its self espousing Bryan's un reasonable cause and course. We wish correspondents in all the nearby post offices, Write at onrp THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 1915 he timed his resignation We suppose it will be gener ally conceeded that the Editor of this paper has never entertained any very high regard for Mr, William IJennings Bryan during his whole political career to this date. From the time he started his insane political propaganda of 16 to 1 to the morning when he announced his resignation as Secretary of the State, and quit Mr. Wilson’s cabinet, he has been in our estimation the same selfish, unsafe, eratic, politician, playing the cards for Bryan pretending to be looking ahead and surely always with an eye single to his own selfish purpose. He has stuck his mouth in almost evpry national issue, and a good many State issue with a view of dominating the Dem ocratic party and its principals of dominating the selection of men for party purposes. It need not be recalled that when the time came to select a man to run for President to be vot ed for in the last national elec tion, Mr, Bryan vehemently opposed every name that was selected, until he became thoro ughly convinced it couM never be Bryan, then he reached the conclusion to let up his opposi tion and claimed, he named Wil son. He stuck his mouth in our State politices, and did his best to defeat Senator Simmons. It was a matter that was none of his business, and it was a piece of impertinence that he made it such. He has all the gall, and presumption that may be found in any man, and for some reason or other entirely unknown to us has a strangle hold on a num ber of American people. His method has been to jump ahead at some new and impractical idea to elicit a shout from his followers and thus attract at tention. His resignation as secretary of State was timed to occur when it proved the shabbiest piece of bum statesmanship this country has ever exper ienced. Nothing that he can say nor any excuse he or his friends can in any degree ren der will plead an extenuation for this deliberate and wilful piece of unpatriotic political abasement indulged for none other than rank selfishness. Bryan timed his resignation when he hoped it would strike the administration the harder blow, and the ink had hardly been dry on the instrument when he began his threat to flood this country with letters in extenua tion of his course, an effort at justifying a devision of popular sentiment in this country at a time when every patriot knew we should stand as one man be hind the administration. Mr. Taft today is an infinitly bigger man than Mr. Bryan, Taft is a loyal, a patriotic citizen of this Rupublic, and a much better man. Who is it that would claim and say that for Bryan. Mr. Wilson loves peace just as well, or much better than Bryan but he has enough character, enough patriotism to strive to uphold the dignity and honor of this nation, Bryan has not. At the Churches. SEEDS tND DOlLARSi.rTl"" A WASTE OP STALE GAS The following is clipped from W.J. Bryans letter that he wrote in defense of his resignation. It will be notea how he is playing before the foot lights for atten tion. What school boy is it that does not know that war is all he has painted it and more too, but what is he going to do about it, what is this nation going to do about it, according to his advise wait until the Germans cut throats enough to satiate their thirst for blood, then with hats off ask them to stop and talk to us about the wrongs she has in flictid upon the citizenship of this country. To paraphrase a word Bryan says: Wilson desired peace, but he sought it according to the rules of the old System. He believs that firmness would give the best assurance of the maintenance of peace and faithfully following precedent. The others went so near the fire that they were, one after another, sucked into the contest. Never before have the frightful follies of this fatal system been so clearly revealed as now. The most civilized and enlightened—aye, the most Christ ian of the Nations of Europe—are grappling with each other as if in a death struggle. They are sacrificing the best and bravest of their sons on the battlefield; they are converting their gardens into cemeteries and their homes into houses of mourning; they are taxing the wealth of today and laying a burden of debt on the toil of the future; they have filled the air with thunderbolts more deadly than tnose of Jove and they have mul'iplied the perils of the deep Adding fresh fuel to the flame of hate, they havf daily devised new horrors, until one side is endeavoring to drown non-com batant men, women and children at sea, while the other side seeks to starve non combatant men, women and children on land. And they are so absorbed in alternata re*^aliations and in competitive cruelties that they seem, for the time being, blind to the rights of neutrals and deaf to the ap peals of humanity. A tree is known by its fruit. The war in Europe is the ripened fruit of the old system. “This is what firm.iesa, supported by force has done in the old world; shall we invite it to cross the Atlantic? Already the jingoes of our own coun try have caught the rabies from the dogs of war; shall the opponents of or ganized slaughter be silent while the disease spreads? No Mr. Bryan, w^; must not do that we will sit still and let Ger many murder our citizens and when we plead with her to stop sit still and let her spit in our face, and tell us they do not care a rap as they have Bryan with them, and such other fel lows as he can drag away from the administration.
