He should have been given isolated quarters at least until popular fury had abated. To have locked him up in a room at night among eighty or one hundred vicious cut throats, was to invite thf» very thing that occured. In the city square is a stone tablet commemorative of the spot where in 1794 Kosciusko assumed command of the Polish army. It is said that the playhouse at Cracow is one of the most wonderful in Europe, and many famous plays have had their original production there. The city of Cracow was four times in the hands of foreign invaders. It is not so Euro pean a metropolis as Warsaw, but has always remained a characteristic Pol ish town. Should the fortunes of war bring another invasion of Cracow the inhabitants would not be surprised, for at different times the Bohemian, Mongol, Prussian, Swede, Tartar, Rus sian, and Austrian armies have marched through its streets. It is one of the Important strongholds of Aus tria.” A Cough Remedy That Relieves It’s prepared trom the healing Pine Balsam, Tar and Honey— all mixed in a pleasant, soothing ('ougii Syrjup cal- 'ed Dr. Bell’s Pine-Tar-Honey. Go to your dealer, ask for a 25c origi nal bottle Dr Bell’s Pine-Tar-Honey start using at once and get rid of your Cough and Cold. to be told the risk it incurs even in protesting against the murderous assaults of Germany, but we trust Mr. Wilson w'ill give no attention to Austrias gibberish, even though it was advised by Germany. Germany is determined to have her own way in conducting this murderous war, and thinks to pacify to the United States after she has done her deviltry, by doing some smooth diplomatic lying. It is time to cut loooe from Germany, she has violated every princii)al of international law, and has never made the proper amends for it, her ad mission of her cut throat work 1 is not correcting it. Judge Peeble gets up and frisks around briskly in regard to the quart whiskey law. He claims it is all right to ship in a quart or two quarts or even more, if you want it. The Judge seems to favor the fellow that wants his in a jug that will hold more than a quart. Judge Daniels holds that the Grier quart law is constitutional. Peeble is not constitutional. Washington had to be invoked to end an intolerable situation. Though all these years the slime of the Thaw money has stained better men than he. It has ruined reputations, filled prison cells, closed promising careers in dishonored death. It has left its trail of debauchery through many States and a neighbor country. Everywhere it has incited greed, rewarded treachery, stirred'Up filth. Sanity is a matter of opinion, a matter of degree, a matter of fact; and the fact can be ascer tained. Thaw was held to be insane when he killed Wtiite. He is held to be sane now. If he shall be released he will at least not have gone scatheless for his crime, and New York will be well satisfied to hear less and see nothing of him in the future. -N. Y. World. SEEDS AND DOLURS Seed that is not planted does not grow. Dollars that are not banked do not increase. No far mer is so foolish as to think that a paper bag of watermelon seeds hanging from the rafters, will ever grow until he planted it. \ et are you not expecting those dollars in that bureau drawer will grow without banking them? Dead seeds and dead dollars brings no returns. MEBANE BANK & TRUST CO. Mebane, N. C. J. Archie Long, Pres. Ben F. Warren, Vice-Pres. Felix F. Smith, Cashier. Hints on Golf for Women. Woman players, especially begin* ners, are Inclined to swing the club so far around that they are thrown off their balance and the club swings the woman Instead of the woman the club. This fault caa be corrected by keep ing a tight grip on the club at all times during the swing, as it is the loosened hold that allows the head of the club to drop too near the ground. In the drive, which requires the fullest swing of any of the strokes except perhaps the brassy shot, the shaft of the club at the top of the swing should not go beyond tiie horizontal. There is another point that woman players, even experienced ones, are apt to neglect, and that Is the rules of the game. There have been many matches In which players have been disqualified through the unconscious disregard or breaking of some rule. A book of general rules can be pur* chased at any place where golf clubs are sold, and the local or ground rules of each club are printed on the score cards of that club, so there is no ex cuse for any one being in a state of Ignorance.-Outlng. VERNON Burling:ton, N, C, Attorney at Law The best attention given to all matter entrusted to my care. It was a shame that the auth orities of Oorgia should lock Leo Frank up in a prision, and then permit an immate to cut his throat. If he was entitled t3 life, he was entitled to a protection of that life, more es pecially as he was rendered en tirely defenselss, and helpless so far as anythmg he might do to defend himself. There was every proof in the treatment of the ex-Governor, that the State was a seething hot bed ot jewish fanaticism and hate, and despite what other, and better men thought, this wild mad idea of revenge, would plot and plan every device for Franks injury. His guilt or inoeense has absolutely nothing to do with the question He was in the care anrt keeping of the great State of Georgia and since it had assumed full charge of is person, and his liberty it vas Its duty to give to him ample and full protection.
