Crawford, Waynaville, ATorth Carolina : Dear Sir It affords me the greajt pleasure personally and as President of the Marion Demo cratic Club, to tender you the heartfelt congratulations of my self and that of each member of our club on the splendid, brilliant and successful campaign made by you, and for the glorious victory crowning your efforts, bearing fruit in your triumphant election. Let us hope that the victory so signally gained by your herculean efforts in behalf of Democratic principles and good government will perpetuate both as the perma nent sentiment of the Ninth Con gressional District. Wishing you long life and health to enjoy the blessings which your talent and splendid efforts have conquered, I am Yours faithfully, Ei. II. DvSAkT, Pres. Marion Dem. Club. Waynesville, Nov. 16, 1898. Ed. If. Dysart, Jis., Marion, North Carolina : My Dkar Sir : We have won a great victory against odds, and I give the democracy of McDowell full credit for the splendid fight vou made; and I know that the Marion Club was an important factor, and through you I desire to return my thanks to each mem ber of it for the unselfish patriot ism exhibited in this contest for the redemption of our grand old State from the hands of the4'goths and vandals," and for the over throw of the republicans in this dis trict. Every true North Caro linian ought to rejoice. Yours truly, Y. T. Crawford. .llDOi: .1. W. liOWMAN. lie J-t His- Appointment to Siuci-nl the I.at .JiiI;;i- .rv no in this District. K'akih Tost, Tuesday. Jacob W. Bowman was yester day made Judge of the Superior Court from the Tenth District to succeed the late judge L. L. Greene, deceased. The appointment was made late yesterday afternoon by Governor Russell. The report was prevalent in Asheville that Ldward T. Justice, of McDowell county had been named to succeed Judge Greene and it gained currence in Raleigh afterwards, but it was totally with out foundation. Captain Moore, of Yancey, was considered by some people as the probable appointee, as was Charles F. McKesson, but the knowing ones have all along insisted that the Governor would finally select JaKe Bowman. The only argument used against his appointment was that he has been in ill health, but his friends say that his health has been com pletely restored. The successor of the late Judge Greene is an old time Republican, lie has been a candidate for the Judiciary on more occasions than one, but until the present time he has been singularly unsuccessful. He is a resident of Bakersville, Mitchell county, and is well ad vanced in years, being now in his 65th year. Judge Bowman no doubt owes his appointment to his relation ship to Senator Pritchard. The Senator married Judge Bowman's daughter. The incident is of more than passing notice. It develops the fact that the oft quoted "breach," which it has been claimed existed between the Gov ernor and the Senator, is a pure matter of fiction. Strong pressure was brought to bear on the Gov ernor not to select Bowman. The new Judge will serve until the next regular election, when a successor will be chosen to fill the unexpired term of Judge Greene. The office pays a salary of $2,700. Richmond county the county of Rev. .1. II. Page gave a demo cratic majority of a little over 1, 000. The county lias been Repub lican lor many yeais by al nost as large a majority. The s! earner Australia has staited to bring back from Hono lulu the Fust New Yoik Regiment, whose members ate largely ill with typhoid lever. C.) regiment (i.egroes) expect to go to their Cuban station about Dec. 10. James D. McNeill, Esq., of Fay ettevillo, is a candidate for rail road commissioner. Thus lar there are seven known candidates for the two vacancies in the com mission which will shortly occur and vhose snccessois vull be eleetod by the General Assembly. The annual meeting of the Western North Ca;,lina Confer ence of the M K. Church, which was held in Winston, closed Tues day evening after an important and interesting session of just a week. Larly in the proceedings Dr. Kilgo made a satisfactory report in relerer.ee t the affairs of Trin ity College, which was accepted and the matter amicably disposed of. What premised to be a lively subj'-ct was speedilv adjusted. A discussion in reference to the editorial management of the Christian Advocate created lively interest. A proposition tending to oust Dr. Crawford from control ws rejected, and a commission was appointed to satisfactorily ar range the business interests jf the paper. After some earnest taU on the subject, the Conference voted to recommend a return to the gov ernment of the $288,000 paid on account of the Pubbs-iing House claim of the M. Ii. C.urch, which wj:s obtained under false rcpre sentations of its agents. It was decided to hold the nexi Conference in Concard. A vote of thanks was given presiding Bishop Fitzgerald, and the people of Winston tor hospitality, and the session closed after the announce merit of appointments. Another instance of the capacity lor bungling ot the two last fusion legislatures is developed by the confusion produced as to when the teims of justices of the peace elected in ItiM expire and when the terms of thoe elected on No vember 8, 181S, begin.
