Xew mill and factories are going up all o -or the land, new mines are being opened up, new railroads are be ing built, new and improved meth ods of agriculture are being em ployed, and a strong current of capital and thrifty population is setting in from the Xorth and West. Such a demand for South ern farming lands was never known before in the history of the coun try. Thousands and thousands of letters of inquiry concerning far ming ami mining lands are pour ing in to the Ian! r.gents of the South from all quarter, from the entire North, Canada. England and Franco. The'(Jreat S uh," in ptead of the '"Croat West," is the land of promise for coming genera tions. The North has grown rich and powerful off of the South and for many yc ars has controlled the wealth of the whole country and procured legislation in her fvor, find to-day fixes th priceg of th is never before, and are becoming terribly discontended. The poo re lapses have not improved com mensuratelv with the material i)i-oM-ess of the country. In fact ihev are poorer th in ever, lher are three million paupers in tl: i nited State, a condition of ;f- f irs hardly justified by the com fortiug philosophy of "natural si lection." .or the ''survival of tlu (it test." Even life is unequally di.-1 ributed ; the l.-ihoivr iive---n an average in KnJ uid and France, twenty-eight oar; the rich man iift -six. It is e.-timated thar .very mile of railway constructed has cost the sacrifice of a human life. We reckon not that com merce floats its waters on deep seas of human suffering. Huxley says that unless the conditions affect ing the greater part of humanity are allevi ited, it would be better for some friendly comet to career this way and annihilate the earth. 'There evidently needs to a re adjustment somewhere. Shall wealth he equally divided? No, for that would lead to the worst forms of communism and anarchy. Shall men be rewarded in propor tion to the toil they undergo? No. for who can compare fairly the la bor of hoeing corn with that of in venting a dynamo orcomposing an opera? Shall they be paid in pro portion to the time they work: impossible, for upon what basis may we compare the 1'2 hours oc cupied by a weaver at the loom with the few miii'.ites consumed by a genius as he dashes oil' some bril liant creation. " There are two methods propo sed for solving the difficulty. One is through the agency of law and reason, the other by dynamite. "Unfortunately, there is a con servative class among us that, like the Hou.-e of Peers in England, steadily resists all change. Such resistance has made important leg islation impossible except by vio lent and revolutionary methods Maeaulv, b -lore his death, foresaw the trouble now gathering, and Spencer has predicted that war is just ahead. There is a lost confi dence on the part of the laborer for the capitalist to be restored. And if the difficulties that now confront us a re not settled bv the voluntary exercise of humane principles, then there is occasion for the direst forebodings. Retween the conservatives who oppoo all reform, and the n.bid anarchists who want to overthrow the entire social and political fa bric, there are those who face the issue squarely and manfully; and to these we turn for a peaceful set tlement of the vexed question."
