;. -a- IS MARION PROGRESS PUBLISH KD KVERY THURSDAY EVENING BY THE Mcdowell publishing co, Marion, N. C. S. C. LITTLE, S. E. WHITTEN, Editor. Manager. Entered at the Postoffice at Mariou, N. C a second class matter. TERMS : OHK Ykar. .... $1.00 Six Months, .... 50c Thr;k Months, 86 Strictly in Advance! M A.RtO!T. N. C, NOV. 18, 1909 The Atlanta races are over, Cook and Peary have disappeared from view, Tat't has h' Dished his swing around the circle. Verily it looks as if news will be scarce. It you do not believe that the farme rs of McDowell county are progressive and that the products they mis. would take blue riblxms at any Fair just take a peep in the ofhYc of TlIK Pl; XiP.ESS. Tin' controversy between Jack .Jol.ii-. ;i .tnd dim .JeiTeries promises to L- .is inteivMing the Cook and Peary ru -krt. There will be something doing when these two men get together and if Johnson wins, well whats the use. Thk Pro;kess has received a neat booklet issued by the Greater Charlotte Club. The advantages of Charlotte are set forth in a neat attractive way and the opportuni ties offered investors and home seekers is dwelt upon at length. Winston-Salem businessmen will raise ten thousand dollars for im provements to be made in that county on the National Highway from New York to Atlanta. What would McDowell county raise for a highway from Asheville to the sea The Spartanburg Herald shows its enterprise by running an ex cursion over the C. C. & O. to Alta Pass on Thanksgiving day but it shows shortsightedness in not letting the excursionists stop in Marion. However we will hold up the train and take a few off anyway. A Boost, The Marion Democrat has chang ed its name to Marion PiifjGREss and last week signalized Marion's progress by issuing an illustrated "Booster Number'" of 18 pages, in which the story of Marion's prog ress, opportunities and possibili ties is well told. Statasville Land mark. New Road. The petitions now being circu lated which will b presented to the road commissioners ask that they make the now road to the C. (J & (). station by way of Elhanan. If this road is not bui:t :dong this route it will greatly inconvenience the three hundred people who will te employed by the cotton mill and the other people wno Vive in that section. It will add nearly a mile to tl eir journey from the mill vil lage to the station. As He Was and is. Josh Billings, In New Vork Weekly. An editor iz a malt; being whose buzziness it iz to navigate'a nuze paper. He writes editorials, grinds out poetry, inserts deths and wed dings, s'm is nut maneskripts, keeps a wastebi skt: blows the "devil,'' steals mrtttir, Htes other peoples battles and sells hiz paper for n dollar a year, takes white beans and apple sas for pay when he can gel it, raises a.large family, works nineteen hours out of ev.'ry twenty-four, knows no Sunday, gets damned by everybody and once in a while whipt by somebody, lives poor, dies middle siged and often brokenhearted, leaves no money, iz rewarded for a life of toil with a short free obituary puff in the newspapers. Few people consider the work, expense and time it takes to issue an edition of that size. A few facts however may prove interest- mg. lhe paper use4.tn this edi-, tion weighed nearly one thousand pounds, the forms from which it ! was printed weighed fifteen hun dred pounds. If the paper used in the Booster Edition was placed flat upon the ground it would make a solid strip of paper sixteen and one half inches wide and over ten miles long. The Limit. Practicajly for the first time in the history of automobile raceaf a meet has been held in which no one was killed. Atlanta is the city which van boast of the safest speed way in the world. U is hard for many of our people living iu this section who are oo4 - familiar with the high power racing car to be lieve that it is possible to drive a machine at the rate of over one hundred miles per hour. That is what Strang in a - two hundred horsepower Fiat did at the Atlanta races. In the two hundred mile race Chevrolet driving a Buick made the distance in the remark able time of two hours and forty one minutes. The question that naturally arises in the minds of the people is "when will the limit be reached"? Many thought it was reached several years ago when liarney Oldheld drove his car in the Florida races at over seventy miles rjer hour, j But at every meet new world re cords are established. It is but natural to suppose that contests of the future will be be- tween air crafts and not automo biles. A few years ngo n person would journey thousands of miles to sep a bicycle race. Today there are only a few who will walk around a city block to see a bicycle racj. The next great meeting of the air crafts will be held in the United States owmg to Curtiss, an Ameri can, winning the International cup ! at. the foreign meet.. Already ily-1 grains are w orthl.
