S.- MARION PROGRESS PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY EVENING RY THE Mcdowell publishing co, Marion, N, C, s. c. LITTLE, S. E. WHITTEN, Editor. Manager. Entered at the Postoffice at Marion, Nr C, as second class matter. TERMS : One Year, .... $1.00 Six Months, ... - 50c Thkeb Months, 25 Strictly In Advance! MARION, N. C, NOV. 25, 19W LEST WE FORGET. We desire to call the attention of our readers to the call of the ladies Benevolent Society for aid. This "society is undertaking a work which should have the support of our people, that of caring for the poor and needy through the cold winter months. Hunger is as re lentless and remorseless as death. It is a great tyrant which knows not the meaning of the word pity or mercy. Marion on this day has much to give thanks for, her people as a whole are prosperous and happy but there are a few who know neither prosDerity or happiness and who need assistance. While we gather around the warm cheerful fireside, with a pantry well stocked let us not for get the few unfortunate people whose pantry is empty and is whose tire place there glows only a few small embers. Misfortune does not choose the time nor place of its visit, it may come in the garb of sickness or death and leave a family without means of support. Hunger and cold does not choose the place of its visit and when they come jointly to an unfortu nate home they sow in the hearts and minds of those people the seeds of anarchy, rebellion and un belief. It is for the protection of those people that the Benevolent Society was organized and maintained. This society is in need of warm clothes, shoes and other articles for distribution among the poor. trusts, Sugar trust, Beef trust and every trust except trusting in the Lord No doubt the merchants in this small town saw in this combine the dream of their life time. They no doubt thought that the dream of great wealth would be realized. They may have pictured automo bile delivery wagons standing in front of their stores, vast estates like that of Carnegie, the late Har riman, Astor, Vanderbilt and others. They no doubt looked in to the near future at the time when they could sit in mahogany office chairs, with secretaries at their back and call, smoke Havan- j i. r-t 1 1 I ii tt cigars uuu uruih. wK:a oom aw i wh.ch the day long.
