SUGAR ON. FREE LIST Committee Presents Bills to Put Sugar on Free List and Extend Present Excise Tax. WashinfftoD March 1. A bill to put sugar on the free list, elimi nating $53,000,000 in annual cus toms revenue and - another to ex tend the prosent corporation tax to include individuals and co-partnership doing business of $5,000 a year or over, were ratified tonight by the Democratic caucus of the House, i The excise tax, so called by the Ways and Means Committee, is in effect the income tax. The bill is so drawn that it is expected to comyly with the Supreme ' Court's decision against the constitution ality of an income tax. Its effect would be to tax every pefrson who earns more than $5,000 a year, on the excess of 5, 000 at the rate of 1 per cent. The estimate of Chairman Un derwood and members of the Ways and iVJeans Committee is that the proposed excise, tax would bring in a revenue of between $50,000. 000 and $60,000,000 a year. Placing: sugar on the free list, the Democratic leaders estimate would reduce thepri ce of sugar to the consumer about a cent and a half a poundi ' SUGAR BILL, FAVORABLY REPORTED. w 'Washingt gar - tariff revision f bill j was report-: . . ed favorably to the house today by Chairman Underwood.
