Mr pinley said it was not a mere accident hat the progress of North Carotin i recent years had been co-lncideQ' ith the development of f mar st r.t ntnsoortattan agencies. viewing the splendid achievements o the people of North Carolina as shown by United States Census figures, he summed up the agricultural progrear of the State by showing that the total value of farm prosperity in the State Increased from $233,834,693 In 1900 tc $537,716,210 in 1910, an increase of $303,881,517, or 130 per cent, as cam pared with an Increase of 100.1 per cent for all of the other States. Even more noteworthy were the statistics of manufacturing showing a gain in the value of manufactured products tn North Carolina from $85,274,083 la 1899 vn $216,656,055 in 1909, an la crease of $131,381,972, or 154 per cent, va compared with 80.7 per cent for all of the other States, every manufactur ing industry in the State, with the single exception of turpentine and ros in, showing increases ranging from C per cent for men's clothing to 459 per cent for boots and shoes and 4(3 per cent for mattresses and spring beds. He drew the conclusion from the sta tistics .of agriculture and manufactur ing that economic conditions In North Carolina are exceptionally favorable to progress aad development. As i ho wing that the progress of those parts of the State served by Southern Railway lines compares most favor ably with other parts of the State, Mr. Ftnley pointed out that, la thr twenty-year census period from 1M0 to 1910, covering the first sixteen years of the corporate existence of the Southern Railway Company, eight een North Carolina cities with a pop ulation of 2,500 or more In 1910 had showa a growth of more than 80 per cent, these cities being Asheville with 83.3 per cent increase; Hickory, 83.6 per cent; Statesville, 98.4 per cent; Concord, 100.8 per cent;. Wbaa-ton-Salem, 111.6 per cent; Mount Airy, 117.4 per cent; Shelby, 124.3 per cent; Headersonville, 131.7 per cent; Gra ham, 151.7 per cent; Burlington, It 0.2 per cent; Lexington, 189 per cent; Charlotte, 194.3 per cent; MooresvUle. 2S3.7 per cent; Greensboro, 379.2 per cent; Gastonla, 457.5 per cent; Thorn asvllle, 557.1 per cent; High Point, where the increase could not be ex pressed in percentage for the reasot that the population which' had grown to 9,525 In 1910, was so small in 1I9C that it was not seturned separately by the census: and-Salisbury.
