Governor Scott To Give Address
At Dedication Of Radio Station
Governor Kerr Scott will deliver

the princpal address at formal dedi
cation of Marion's new WBRM radio
station here next Sunday.
Ceremonies to be held in the Ma
rion High School auditorium will be
gin at 2 p. m. Judge J. Will Pless,
Jr., will preside and the program
will include speeches by represen
tatives of public education, indus
try, civic clubs churches, agricul
ture and business firms. Music will
be furnished by the Marion High
School band.
Out of town guests of honor
scheduled to be present for the oc
casion will include the Mayors of
Spruce Pine, Newland, Burnsville
and Old Fort.
Marion's first radio broadcast
went on the air Monday, May 9.

Tuesday night.
Charles C. Elledge was elected to
succeed himself as principal of the
Marion High School for the school
term 1949-1950. Other principals
elected were as follows: Miss Ruth
Greenlee, Clinchfield Elementary
School; Miss Mamie Stacy, East
Marion Elementary School; Mrs.
Garland Williams, Eugene Cross
Elementary School; and Matt Mc
Rrayer, West Marion Elementary
School.

The McDowell Post No. 56 of the
American Legion elected officers at
a meeting held Tuesday evening in
the community building.
Clarence Wise was elected Com
mander of the local post succeeding
G. W. Wilson. Other officers are:

For Coming Year
The names of directors of the Ma
rion Merchants association who will
serve during the coming year were
announced this week by Mrs. Ethel
Crisp, executive secretary.

Pledges Aid
To School Band
The Marion Kiwanis club held its
regular weekly meeting Tuesday
evening at the Marion Community
building with Roy W. Davis, presi
dent, presiding.
Kiwanian Ray Cline, in charge of
the program, announced that a
Round Table Discussion would be
hold following the reading of the
minutes and reports by the secre
tary. During the round table discus
sion the splendid work of Bernard
Hirsch, director of the high school
band, was recognized and a move
ment was started to purchase new
band uniforms for the entire band
as a-ijesture of appreciation for th«
public service rendered by this high
school organization.
The Kiwanis club went on record
of pledging the purchase price for
15 uniforms. It was pointed out that

died early Thursday after a long ill
ness, were held at 2 p. m., Saturday.

the Baccalaureate sermon to be de
livered at eight o'clock, Sunday ev
ening, June 5, by Rev. C. C. Cross,

church. Final exercises will be hpid
Monday evening, June 6. Tuesday,
the eighth grade will observe

Poppies by the thousands are
coming from the skilled fingers of
disabled war veterans in preparation
for Poppy Day, May 28, Mrs. Sam
Proetor, Poppy Chairman of Mc
Dowell Unit of the American Leg
ion Auxiliary, announced today.
Mrs. Proctor is directing arran
gements for the observance of Pop
py Day here, when the veteran
poppies will be worn to honor the
dead of both world wars and to
aid the disabled and the children of
veterans. Describing the poppy
activities she said:

WOULD SHARE
IN BOND ALLOTMENT
Raleigh—McDowell county will
receive $422,005 for school build
ing and $1,540,000 for road build
ing if voters on June 4 authorize the
issuance of school and road bonds,
according to a letter received by
county commissioners from Govern
or W. Kerr Scott.
School1 and road bond bills passed
by the 1949 General Assembly allo
cate those amounts to be spent in
the (Kmnt'y, provided that the peo
ple authorize the issuance of the
bonds when they vote in the June 4
election.

Corn Trophy
On Display
The trophy to be awarded the win
ning state of North Carolina vs.
Virginia corn-growing contest is
now on display in the window of
Belk Broome company. The exhibit
is designed to instruct local farmers
in methods of corn growing which
will contribute toward winning the
contest. Samples of hybrid corn
efrown in McDowell county are also
on display.
The trophy will be awarded the
state with the greatest increase in
1949 over the 1948 yield.

In State Contest
Marion High winners in the track
meet held in Morgan ton on Friday,
May 6, will be entered in the State
contest to be held at Chapel Hill, C.
C. Elledge, Marion High School prin
cipal, said last week.
Gilbert Packett won three of the i
six first places for Marion. He lead
in the 100 yard dash, the 200 yard
dash and the discus throw. John
Finley won ^irst place in the broad
jump, a distance of 18 feet. Ken
neth Cannon won first place in pole
vault, and Guy Smith in the shot
put.

of the first grade grand prize in
the 1949 East Marion Yard Con
test, it is announced.
