NEWS IN BRIEF.
State fair at Ualeigh Oct. 18th to 23d,
inclusive.
Supt. Uenbow is the right man in the
right place.

Francis Deaton, town surveyor, is busy
laying out new streets and grounds.
A laundry to be located at the power
house is among the sure improvements.
Mr. Shaw expects to have his livery
stable ready for business by the first of
November. l
Holly Inn is now., being enlarged to
double its former capacity and will open
for the season Nov. 15th.
After Nov. 1st the Casino will be open
for boarders at the usual rates $4.50
per week, dinners $2.50.
The two fawns born here last April
are growing fast and add greatly to the
interest in the ever popular deer park.
The new photograph gallery will be
located in the general store building
which is now in course of construction.
Hotel Melver is full to overflowing
with workmen engaged on the numerous
new buildings being erected in the vil
lage. The bath rooms in the Casino will be a
much needed improvement, and will be
open to the public by the payment of a
small fee.
Postmaster Couch has sent his resig
nation to Washington. It is expected
that Charles 1). Uenbow will be appointed
to till the vacancy.
Town Surveyor Deaton has in hand the
construction of a new map of Moore
county. When it is finished we shall all
know "where we are at."
It is rumored that through trains will
soon be run from High Point through
Pineliurst to Aberdeen, connecting with
the Seaboard Air Line at that point.
An improvement in our water supply
system is contemplated, whereby the
water can be forced through the pipes for
house use before reaching the storage
tank.
Plans are being made for the erection
of a number of houses on the outskirts of
the village for the use of workingmen,
which will be rented at very reasonable
rates.
"The Palmetto" continues a popular
apartment house, nearly every suite be
ing taken. The two vacant suites can be
rented for the season for $45 and
respectively.
A circulating library will be opened in
connection with the post oilice when the
new store building is ready for occup incy.
Miss Genie Upham will act as librarian.
"The Cedars" will again be used as a
lodging house in connection with the
cafe the coming season. There are a
few rooms still vacant. Information can
be obtained of C. D. Benbow, agent.
One of the pleasantest drives around
Pineliurst will be the road to Carthage
when the commissioners so improve it
that a stranger will not be led astray by
the numerous old roads left by the lum
bermen. Mr. Everett Couch has resigned as
assistant postmaster, and Miss Genie
Upham has been appointed to fill the
vacancy. Mr. Couch will enter the
employ of the Southern Pines Electric
Light Co.
The Magnolia house will soon be
opened under the management of J. L.
Pottle of Jefferson, N. II. This will be
Mr. Pottle's second season in the Mag
nolia and will no doubt be sucessful as
in the past.
"Pine Pest" will be used as an annex
to the Holly Inn as last year, and will
be in charge of Mrs. J. II. Atwood,
which is a sullicient guarantee that
everything possible will be done for the
convenience and comfort of every guest.
The old Aberdeen and West End rail
road, now known as the Aberdeen and
Asheboro railroad, makes connections at
Asheboro for High Point and Greensboro.
We are informed that Mr. Page intends
to improve the service in the near future.
"The winter cottages in and around the
village are rapidly filling up, and in
quiries are continually being received
from northern people regarding the
climate, advantages, accommodations,
etc., of this section of North Carolina
and especially of Pineliurst. There is
no better place for northern people to
spend the winter season than in Pine
hurst, as is evidenced by the fact that
many of the people who are now renting
cottages spent the last winter season
here.
PERSONAL MENTION.
Mr. L. Goodrich has been appointed
foreman at the village farm.
N. McKinnon, formerly of Lowell,
Mass., is a popular clerk in the general
store.
Uncle Perry, ex-engineer at the pump
ing station, has been in town during the
past week.
Mrs. Drew and daughter Nettie will
occup3r suite No. 2 at "The Palmetto" the
coming season.
Mr. J. It. Bickuell of Maiden, Mass.,
writes that he will again visit Pineliurst
during the winter season.
Miss Kitty Dees, stenographer to Supt.
Benbow, has returned from a vacation
which she spent at Newborn.
Charles E. Vale has returned from his
vacation in the north and is busy with
his camera taking views in Pineliurst
and vicinity.
Dr. Bradbury and family recently
returned from a visit north, and are now
settled in their pleasant home on Mag
nolia road.
Harry Stillings the popular electric car
conductor during list reason, will again
occupy that position on Nov. 1st.
Mrs. Alice Hubbard and family of "The
Oasis," Dogwood road, have returned
from a visit to relatives in Madison, Wis.
Mr. J. S. Bagg of Syracuse, N. Y.,
who spent last winter in Pineliurst, ex
presses his intention to again visit us the
coming winter.
T. J. Ellenwood of Brooklyn, N. Y.,
has engaged a suite of rooms in "The Dart
mouth," which he will occupy as soon as
the building is finished.
F. L. Ilightower, painter and contract
or, has taken the contract to paint the
buildings now under construction by
Uain & Longest in our village.
Mrs. A. E. Upham who conducted the
Casino so successfully during the past
season will again assume charge during
the season commencing Nov. 1st.
The return of E. II. Fisher of Boston
f )Y the season is eagerly looked for. As
end man in a first class minstrel enter
tainment he has no equal in Pineliurst.
Mrs. M. A. G. Taylor and daughter
May, of "The Waldheim," Chinquapin
road, have returned from their old home
in Providence, 11. I., where they spent
several weeks of the summer vacation.
They are glad to get back to the sunny
south.
Mrs. 11. M. Couch who has recently
removed to Southern Pines, will be
greatly missed in our religious services.
She could always be depended on to give
her personal assistance to maintain the
meetings.
Mr. 11. M. Couch, formerly town su
perintendent, has removed to Southern
Pines, where he will resume the manage
ment of the Ozone Hotel which he con
ducted previous to his connection with
Pineliurst.
Gen. II. B. Carrington and family of
Hyde Park, Mass., will reside in Pine
liurst this winter. We ha ve very pleas
ant recollections of his son Chase and
d lughters Henrietta and Jane, who were
of so much assistance in the entertain
ments in the village last season.
