The steamlitters at the Holly Inn have completed their work above the lirst lloor with the exception of bronzing the pipes. If there is a healthier, prettier, or more conveniently arranged village than ours on 'the footstool' we should like to know its name. Supt. Henbow returned from a trip cross country Sunday evening, well laden with fragrant roses and apple and cherry blossoms. Remember the debate at the Pine Ridge school house tonight (Friday) and be ready to tell which you had rather have an education or a fortune. Master Johnny High tower entertained his young friends last Saturday evening, the occasion being his eleventh birthday. An oyster supper was served. A large force of mechanics, including carpenters, masons, steamtitters, plumb ers, painters, paper hangers and fresco artists are now at work on the Holly Inn and every effort is being made to com plete it as soon as possible. A large number of lots of land in JJose land owned by the Roscland Improve ment Co. will be sold at auction Nov. 20th, on the court house steps in Car thage, on account of an execution granted the Combined Oil Co. by the Superior court. Cen. Nelson A. Miles, major general commanding the United States army, recommends an appropriation by Con gress of 307,000 for the coming fiscal year for modern fortifications and high power guns for the defence of Wilming ton. The whistle that has been used during the summer to call the men to work has been removed from the pump house to the electric power station, and its voice changed from a shrill treble to a gruff bass which can be distinctly lreard in all parts of the village. Robert B. Stanley, who is making a trip through this section of the South as a representative of the American Journal of Health, made us a pleasant visit last Sunday. He was looking for the most healthful place in the South, and we have an idea that he was satisfied he had found it when he landed in Pinehurst. Master Mid Leach Bryan of Aberdeen recently discovered a sweet potato, one end of which had grown through the handle of a pitcher and then grown out around it in such a way that the handle could not be removed. It is quite a curi osity, and through the kindness of Mas ter Bryan it will be placed in the Pine hurst museum. A cherry tree was in blossom last Sun day at the home of Noah Deaton, about ten miles from Pinehurst, on the old Peedee road, and at the next plantation this side, that of S. D. MeNairy, an apple tree was in full bloom. Apple and cherry blossoms in November! Think of that, ye dwellers in the frozen North, as you hover about the fireplace. John Barrett (colored) was arrested Wednesday evening, charged with ille gally selling whiskey to colored men in the vicinity of the village. He was car ried to Southern Pines and brought be fore U. S. Commissioner N. M. Clark yesterday, and was bound over to the IT. S. court at Raleigh the lirst Monday in December. Failing to secure bonds he was taken to the county jail at Carthage to await trial. Owing to the increased demand for water it has been necessary to provide additional facilities for supplying it, and a new fire-proof pump house has just been. completed near the power station and workmen are now engaged in put ting in position a new pump with a capacity of 300 gallons per minute, which will no doubt supply the village for some time to come. We expect to receive the benefit of the increased supply in a few days. Miss Cornelia II. Reed of Ashmont, Mass., who spent last winter at the Holly Inn, his written us a letter giving her opinion of Pinehurst, of which the fol lowing is an extract: "Your bright paper Tiik Pinehurst Outlook has just reached me. Dobbs of Carthage, the newly appointed pastor, conducted spec ial pleaching services at the Culdee church on Thursday, Friday, and Satur day of last week, and considerable inter est was excited among the people. On Sunday the services commenced at 11 a. 111. with a service of song by the con gregation, led by chorister A. A. McDon ald. After reading of the scriptures and prayer by the pastor, live children rang ing from three months to two years of age were baptized according to the Pres byterian faith, after which the pastor preached a very instructive sermon on charity and love toward one another and to all the world, taking his text from I. Corinthians 13:4, 5. His effort to show to the 300 or more people present the Christian grace of charity was lis tened to with close attention, and no doubt will be of benefit to many a heart in treading the Christian pathway. After the morning service a business meeting was held to elect a new set of church officers, and the following were chosen: Elders, I. II. Caddell, and Wil liam Bailey; Deacons, C. McQueen, E. II. Caddell, C. L. Wicker and Daniel Blue. I. 11. Caddell, C. L. Wicker and E. II. Caddell were installed.
