A Typical Negro Cabin or "Shack." NEWS IN BRIEF. Average temperature for week ending Thursday Nov. 2"), (52 degrees. Mis. Taylor of "The Waldheiin,M Chin quapin road, has several desirable rooms to rent at reasonable prices. J lev. II. T. (Jivgory of Southern Tines, will conduct Episcopal services in the school house next Sunday at 2 p. in. Our worthy foreman of streets, Mr. Louis Letien, was made happy by the arrival of a new son last Wednesday. At the Tine Ridge Sunday school last Sabbath the usual services were held, and in addition a lecture was delivered to the children by Mr. M. McDonald. The I'inchurst Union Sunday school will, until further notice, meet every Sab bath at 12 m. in the little, red school house at the foot of the Village Green. Next Sabbath Uev. Mr. Emery of Southern l'ines will preach in the school house at 10.45 a. in., and a conference meeting will be held in the same place at p. 111. Owing to the train from the north being lour hours late last Wednesday evening, the trolley car made a special trii to Southern I'ines to accommodate the passengers for Pinehurst. Yesterday morning the square about the general store was tilled with country schooners loaded with turkeys, chickens, L'ggs, and other things supposed to be neeess iry to properly observe Thanks giving day. A preaching service will be held at the Oeep Creek Baptist church next Sabbath, id 2 o'clock p. m., bv the pastor. Rev. Hugh ingraham. This church is very pleasantly located about three miles out f the. village, on the old Deep Creek road. Any of our northern visitors who desne to attend will be heartily weleome. The Pine Ridge Intellectual Improve incut society, at their regular meeting last Friday evening, decided that runkard in the community is preferable to a prevaricator. The subject for dis cussion at the next meeting is: "Were the white settlers justified in driving the Indians from this part of the country?' The Jackson Springs Presbyterian liurch, about eight miles from Pine hurst, is a place where religious services me held every third Sunday. Here a mineral spring is located which is well poken of as a cure for dyspepsia. A drive, to Jackson Springs takes one through the real piney woods and amid scenes which are truly southern. The regular Sabbath prayer meeting of the Beulah Hill church was held last Sabbath at the house of M. McDonald, about three miles from town on the Car thage road, about 30 people being present. Rev. R. B. Tobey of Boston, who is now residing in our village, led the meeting and gave a very interesting talk on Christian living. The people in that vicinity appear to be greatly interested in the subject of religion, and it is hoped that the present winter may see. a great awakening in spiritual things. The next regular preaching service at the Beulah Hill Baptist church will occur next Sabbath at 11 a. 111., and will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. Hugh In graham. This church is located in the woods, about three miles out of the vil lage, in the vicinity of one of the oldest graveyards in this section of country. In the old days the native pine wood was used for headboards for marking the graves, and at the present time inscrip tions can be read which were cut in the wood more than GO years ago. The church lias been organized but a short time, and efforts are now being made to erect a meeting house. Strangers are always welcome. Friends of the Culdec Presbyterian church are circulating a petition for the purpose of procuring funds to build a chimney, and to provide a stove for the meeting-house. When the building was erected a few years ago these things were not provided, but the members now feel that provision should be made to heat the church when necessary during the winter. For the information of our winter guests who may sometime desire to attend the services, we state that the church is located about three miles from town, on one of the pleasantest roads leading out of Pinehurst. It is a very enjoyable drive through groves of pine trees, and a tine view is obtained of the large pond and old grist mill on the McICenzie plantation. The next preach ing service will be held on Sunday, Dec. 5th, by the pastor, Rev. C. II. Dobbs, Jr., of Carthage. PERSONAL MENTION. J. N.
