I'inehikst which may 1e chosen according to individual preference by boat or by all rail. For one whose main object is to get to his journey's end with as little expenditure of time as possible the best route is by rail. An evening train leaving New York (I'ennsyl vania railroad) at U o'clock reaches Southern Tines at 5V the following night. A train leaving New York at 11 a. in., by Penn sylvania railroad, reaches .Southern l'ines at 4 a. in., which is somewhat early for comfort and convenience. The Old Dominion Line of steamers from New York, the IJav Line steamers from lialliinore, the Norfolk and Washington steamers from Washing ton, and steamers on the Cape diaries route, all stop at 1'ortsmouth, Va., and connect with the trains for Southern l'ines. The fare for round trip from New York City to .Southern 1 lues, via 1 ennsylvania railroad, on anv of these routes is j?-2;.;" and are limited fioin Nov. 1st to May 31st. single fare $l(i.o"). Passengers having through tickets, who desire to go bv train and avoid night travel, can leave New Vurk at 11 a.m. (1 ennsylvania railroad), checking baggage through to Southern J lues, reach Kichnioiid same evening at fr'it-, spending the night there, leaving Richmond at MM a. in. and arriving at Southern Pines at 5.53 p. in. One can go by the Cape Charles route, leaving New York (1 ennsylvania railroad) at 8 a. m., reaching Portsmouth at 8.15 p. in., spend the night at 1 ortsmoiith or Norfolk, leave Portsmouth the following morning at :2), reaching Southern 1 incs at 5.55 p. in. An afternoon may be spent in Washington by taking train from Sew York at . K0U a. in.
