May Smith Eggleston in Detroit Free Press. Evolution of the Educational Ideal. Let us place ourselves apart from the tumult which rages on both sides, and, closing our ears, question ourselves whether a new educational ideal may bo evolved from this strife of contending factions and what the general charac ter of this ideal would be. If we assume that the three features which I have mentioned may be combined, wo should have a popular, realistic, individualistic ideal cf education popular, not exclu sive or aristocratic in the narrower senso of tho word; national, not foreign or international, but rather the result of an evolution from tho national life itself; realistic, characterized by strength and action and not by mere thought and aesthetic sentiment; indi vidualistic i. e., aiming at the devel opment of tho individual and not at tho establishment of dull uniformity; net democratic, therefore, if this word im ply a general reduction to a dead level, but rather aristocratic, in tho senso of an individual, not a class, aristocracy. It would be presumptuous at tho pres ent day to state what tho concrete form of such an educational ideal wTould be. I wish to say, however, that the soci ety corresponding to the above ideal would be that of an aristocracy of mind. Is this the type toward which we aro tending? Is the aristocracy of birth and wealth to be supplanted by the aristocracy of personal worth and merit? This has been the philosopher's dream from the day of Plato's "Repub lic" to the present hour. It is the tend ency of nature. It would be the aristoc racy of nature to have every individual stand independently upon his own per sonal merit and not upon tho achieve ments of his father. Professor Paulsen in Forum. Endure Hardship. As a gladiator trained tho body, so must we train the mind to self sacrifice, "to endure all thiugs," to meet and overcome difficulty and danger. We must tako the rough and thorny roads as well as the smooth and pleasant, and a portion at least of our daily duty must bo hard and disagreeable, for tho mind cannot be kept strong and healthy in perpetual sunshine only, and the most dangerous of all states is that of constantly recurring pleasure, ease and prosperity. Most persons will find diffi culties and hardships enough without seeking them. Let them not repine, but tako them as a part of that educational discipline necessary to fit tho mind to arrive at its highest good. New York Ledger. Earnest Fights. "You men aro too cold blooded and mercenary," said a young woman with a mission, according to the Indianapo lis Journal. "You cannot make an ear nest fight for principle as women do. " "Ah," replied the man with a gift for epigram, "then I am to infer that it is principle that makes you scrap so earnestly at the Largain counter." Walnuts aro supposed by some folks to cure rheumatism and toothache and for this purpose, they say, should be carried in the pocket. Tobacco will cure well, have a bright, rich color and flavor, with good burning properties, if liberally supplied with a fertilizer con aining at least 10 actual Potash. in the form of sulphate. The quality of tobacco is im proved by that form of Potash. Our books will tell you just what to use. They are free. Send for them. GERMAN KALI WORKS, 93 Nassau St., New York. GAMES FOR HALLOWEEN. Fireside Diversions In Keeping With the Traditions) of All Saints' Day. Any innocent joke, perpetrated In a spirit of friendly mischief, will befit Hal loween n'ght. Tho idea of tho olden time centered around tho pairing of lad and lass, henco tho chestnuts were put before tho flro to test tho f uturo of those whoso namca they bore. If they burned steadi ly, tho courtship would go well; if they popped apart, tho course cf truo lovo would not run smooth. Handglasses, with apples beside them, should be placed here unci there, so that tho modern Evo may cut her apple and wait for Adam to peep over her shoulder. Greater pleasure, however, will bo found in th! games which all may play. Tho tub of water, with floating apples which must be lifted out by tho teeth alone, and the fork suspended from the ceiling, with its lighted candle at ono end and tho apple, from which a bite is to bo taken at the other, will cause much merriment. The search for the ring in flour is also much enjoyed. The flour containing a ring is packed upon a largo platter. The guests each cut off a slice with a knife, and tho ono uncovering the ring must pick it up with his teeth. Lead, melted in largo iron spoons, may be dropped in water and fortunes told from the shapes which it assumes. Great amusement may bo had by lacing two hickory nuts about three inches apart on the hearth in front of an open fire. Ono is supposed to represent tho girl who places it there and the other her as yet undeclared but mentally chosen lover. Should tho nuts burn brightly, a happy marriage will result. Should the nut named after the man jump toward tho nut named after the girl, she may expect a proposal before the next new moon. October Ladies' Homo Journal. BEE BUZZES. Lack of ventilation often causes damp ness in tho hive. To whiter wifely bees should have 80 pounds of good stores. Granulation in honey is a proof of its purity and superiority. If bees are to bo moved, it should be done before cold weather. It is seldom profitable to go into winter quarters with weak colonies. Only pure, clean, unbleached wax should bo used in making foundations. Comb honey during the fall and winter should be kept in a warm room. Try a broken butcher knife with a blade 2 inches long for prying up supers. Bees never bore for nectar, but seek only of that which is fully exposed. Grade all honey carefully and then set prices to correspond with the grade. If colonies arc in proper condition in everjr respect, robbing seldom occurs.
