FIJI DAY, MARCH 11, 1898.
A Successful Season.
Every season in the short history of
Pinehurst lias been a grand success a nil
all indications point to the present winter
as being even more prosperous, if pos
sible, than those preceding it. Al
though the accommodations for our
Northern visitors have been immensely
increased since last year, the demand is
likely to exceed the supply. The en
larged Holly Inn has nearly reached its
full complement of guests, and the Ca
sino restaurant is taxed to its fullest ca
pacity to provide for the people constant
ly arriving. The cottages are all occu
pied and but a few suites and single
rooms remain idle or unengaged, and
the prospects are that before the season
ends there will not be a vacant room in
the village. Pinehurst is undoubted
destined to continue to grow in size and
popularity and hold its place in the front
rank of the health and pleasure resorts
of the South.
Approaching old age lias many com
pensations for one who is able to forget
himself, his reputation, and his position,
and to work daily merely for the love of
work and for the good it does. In no
way has Dr. Hale shown his quality more
conspicuously than in the example he
has set to all men of absolute unsellish
ness and unstinted generosity in his ex
penditure of talent, time and money, not
merely for the public good, but also for
innumerable private individuals. Chris
tian Register.

Rev. 1. Ii. Tobey will preach in the
Deep Creek church next Sabbath after
noon at H (clock. This church is located
three miles from town, and attendance
at this service will be of interest to our
villagers. All are cordially invited to be
present.

Inn are: (Jeorge A. Mosher of Troy, X.
V., Henry and Miss Wheeler of Phila
delphia, Pa., Edwin V. Sanborn of Xew

ford, Mass.
Cornelius 1'ay who lives about three
miles from the village has sold to Mr.
Tufts a weaving loom which will be
placed in the museum and free exhibi

several days in the week for the gratifica
tion of our northern visitors.
Hey. J. V. Clancy of Medford, Mass.,
who is making his winter home in the
village, will preach in the Culdee church
on Sunday, March 20th, at 3 o'clock p.
m. This church is located about three
miles from town on the Carthage road,
and is attended and supported by the
people in the farming district in that
vicinity. Our villagers are cordially in
vited to be present on the 20th inst.
The Pinehurst Xurseries have been
subjected again to the half-yearly ex
amination for Sail Jose and other scales
by the acting state entomologist, D. W.
E. Wieke of Haleigh, who found the
stock clean and healthy in every respect.
Mr. Katzenslein is kept quite busy now
with packing and shipping shrubbery to
all parts of America, from Xew England
to California and Oregon. Most of the
plants grown in the nursery have proved
a success in Xew England.
The effect of the new dining hall at the
Holly Inn is elegance itself. The large
windows on two sides provide an abun
dance of sunshine during the day, and
after night has fallen myriads of con
cealed electric lamps on the ceiling
and walls diffuse a wealth of light that
is reflected back from the beautifully
tinted walls and well-laden tables, giving
a bright and cheerful air to the room.
Although the hall is a large one, but few
empty chairs are to be seen at meal time
and the tempting menu provided by the
popular hosts is appreciated by a con
stantly increasing number of guests.
