When the doors were opened in the
fall of 1898 Mr. Tufts might well have
considered that ample provision had been
made to accommodate all who might
come. But the fame of this little uni
verse of health and happiness had exten
ded far and wide, and the little village
that had grown up in the wilderness in
less than four years, made another giant
stride into popular favor and grandly
eclipsed the successes of all previous years.
The season brought a host of new faces,
and a large propor
tion of those who
had previously
le irued to appreci
ate the exceptional
advantages ottered
at this charming
resort returned
once more. Ere
the winter was half
over the village
was tilled to its ut
most capacity, and
the number of
people who were
turned away be
cause of lack of
room would easily
have filled another
village of the same
size.
Again an effort
has been made to
provide accommo
dations equal to the
demand, and the
past summer has
been a season of
great activity in
the building line.
A new mammoth hotel the Caro
linahas been built, the Hotel Berkshire,
which was new last year, has been en
larged to double its former capacity,
several other buildings have been erected,
and numerous improvements have been
made throughout the vill tge.
Pinehurst now contains over fifty
houses of various sizes and styles. All
are plastered and painted, and in every
way substantially built from designs of
Kendall, Taylor & Stevens, Burr & Sise,
and other well-known Boston architects.
Perfect sanitary protection in each house
is afforded by water closets connected
with the sewerage system.
The largest building in the village is
the new Carolina, which is also the
largest hotel in the state. It is right up-to-date
in every respect, with appoint
ments calculated to suit the most
fastidious tastes. The quiet home-like
Holly Inn and the cozy Berkshire are
both model hotels containing every mod
ern comfort and convenience, and with
the luxurious Carolina form a trio of
hostel ries of which any town might well
be proud. All are under the manage
ment of experienced men who have
made enviable reputations in their line of
business, and their prices are remarkably
moderate when the character of the
accommodations afforded are considered.
The Pinehurst Casino is a fine large
building centrally located, and is one of
the most popular institutions in the
village. It contains an excellent res
taurant where the cottagers or those
lodging in the numerous apirtment
houses may obtain table board. The
has been added, and the patrons of the
store will be able to obtain meats, fish,
produce and other perishable goods in
first class condition. A large circulating
library, comprising popular fiction and
standard literature, is located here. This
building also contains the offices of the
village superintendent and his assistants,
the money order post office, and a tele
graph and telephone office.
The Sehoolhouse is located at the foot
of the Village Green, and is surrounded
by ample play grounds. Competent
teachers are in charge of the school, and
parents may be assured that their chil
dren can enjoy educational advantages
equal to those at their Northern homes.
The Museum is an old log cabin
erected nearly one hundred years ago,
and until very recently was occupied as a
dwelling. The huge fireplace with its
chimney of sticks and mud occupies
nearly the whole of one end. It shelters
an interesting collection of relics of by
gone days, including hand loom, spin
ning wheels, ancient cooking utensils,
and the hand-made axe with which
the logs composing the building

building also contains a ladies' parlor,
smoking and game rooms, and a reading
room supplied with the leading periodic
als for the free use of the villagers.
Bath rooms are also located here.
The Village Hall is a handsome build
ing with seating capacity for four
hundred people. It contains a large
stage with dressing rooms, scenery, and
all the paraphernalia for amateur the
atricals. The village entertainments are
held here during the week, and on
Sunday religious services are conducted
by clergymen of different denominations.
The Department Store is a fine large
building covering more ground space
than any other store building in the
county. It contains a large; stock of
general merchandise, including a fine
line of heavy and fancy groceries, dry
and fancy goods, men's furnishings,
boots and shoes, drugs and medicines,
hardware, meat and fish in fact every
thing that can be found in the average
New Engl md village. This season a
new cold storage and ice m iking plant
were hewn ready for their place.
The Pinehurst Outlook, the village
weekly newspaper, has its home in the
Outlook building. It furnishes the local
news and entertaining reading matter.
A series of articles describing the many
places of interest near the village is in
course of preparation, and will appear in
its columns from time to time. In the
basement of the Outlook building is
located the Pinehurst Bottling Works,
where carbonated drinks from the
Pinehurst Spring water are prepared
for shipment.
The Steam Laundry is well equipped
with modern machinery and in charge of
competent workmen. It is located just
outside the town limits. Prices for work
are about the same as in the North.
A pleasing feature of the village is a
beautiful grove of the stately long-leaf
pine, situated just inside of the fence on
the south side of the town. Numerous
seats and swings are scattered about
among the grand old trees, and the place
is a favorite resort for the villager. A

deer park containing several acres is lo
cated here and is the home of a herd of
tame deer.
Abundant facilities for amusement and
recreation are to be found in Pinehurst
where the clear blue sky, bright warm
sunshine and dry invigorating air tempt
even the invalid to spend most of his
waking hours out of doors throughout
the winter. Foremost among them is the
golf links undoubtedly the finest 18
hole links in the South covering over
one hundred and fifty acres. A detailed
description of the links will be found
on another page.
There are also ex
cellent grounds for
expert croquet (or
Iloque, as it is now
called), tennis
courts, bowling al
leys, bicycle track
and expert traps
with club house
for trap shooters.
Billiard s, pool,
shuflleboard and
quoits are also pro
vided for, with
sand courts, swings
and other diver
sions for children.
Dancing and or
chestral concerts
in the music rooms
of the several hos
telries and in the
Village Hall serve
to make the time
pass pleasantly,
and numerous mu
sical and literary
entertainments are
provided.
Walks, rides and drives prove very
attractive, and picnics in the beautiful
pine groves m ly be enjoyed even in mid
winter. A large new livery stable has
been erected this season, and it is well
equipped with fine carriages and horses
suitable for both driving and riding.
Cleanliness is a cardinil virtue in
Pinehurst. There are 110 "back yards"
in the generally accepted sense of that
term and no outbuildings. The grounds
in the rear of the cottages are kept as
neat and attactive as those in front, and
