Anna IIubhakd Mekcuk, NEWS IN BRIEF. Do you remember to write it 1900? Klectric lights were Installed in the Power House Cafe on New Years Day. Mr. M. F. Black has been appointed secretary and treasurer of the Pinehuist Sunday school. The prayer and praise service in the the Village Hall next Sunday evening will commence at 7.15. Holy communion will be celebrated in the Village Hall next Saturd ty at 11.30 in. Uev. Mr. Gregory will officiate. The bible class in the Sabbath school will be led by Miss Johnson next Sun day. The school commences at 12 o'clock. Messrs. Huffstickler and Wicker were oufc with their pack of fox hounds yesterday and c.iptured a fox after a hard chase. The highest score made at the bowling alley this season was bowled last Wed nesday evening by W. W. Bain, who made 196 points. The steam heating apparatus for heat ing the Carolina was started up last ; Wednesday for the first time and proved satisfactory in every respect. The meat market has been moved to u temporary addition on the soutli side of the store while improvements are being made in the cold storage apparatus. The preaching service in the Village Hall next Sunday morning at 10.45 o'clock will be conducted by Uev. Mr. Thomas. A children's choir will assist at this service. A hog weighing 419 pounds dressed was purchased by Manager McAlpine at the meat market yesterday. The animal was raised near here and is rather heavy for this section. Bev. Mr. 1'ankin, the able young col ored preacher, will preach at the Jackson Hamlet colored church next Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock and a number of our villagers will attend. A darkey, who was describing how they managed it sleeping four in a bed, said that when one of them wanted to turn over lie "hollered" and they all had to turn at the same time. The regular weekly public concert by the Holly Inn orchestra will be held in the music room at Holly Inn next Sun day evening at 8 o'clock. Our villagers are cordially invited to attend. Our villagers have contributed over a hundred dollars to aid Mr. Louis Letien, who lost all his household effects by tire last week. Of this amount $47.50 was contributed by guests at Holly Inn. A very enjoyable hop was held at the Berkshire last Friday evening and quite a number of the cottagers were present. First class music was furnished by Holly Inn orchestra under the direction of Mr. Trev. Sharp. The New York afternoon papers now reach Pinehurst the next morning, com ing on the new route via the Southern Railway. This is more than seven hours earlier than the' formerly arrived. This train also brings the mail. The employes in the village had a very enjoyable dance at the Bower House Cafe on New Year's night, under the direction of Messrs. Ryan, -Bain and Marshall. Music was furnished by Messrs. Martin Finnegan and George Hardy and d mcing was kept up till a late hour. Manager Carpenter has received a new clipping machine at the liverv stable during the week and is now prepared to clip his horses and to do outside work as well. The new three and four-seated wagons that he purchased a few weeks go are proving very popular for excur sions or picnic parties. Begining New Year's Day, Landlord readway inaugurated the custom of serving afternoon tea in the parlors or music room at Holly Inn every afternoon between 4.30 and 5.30 o'clock. This innovation has proved very popular and appreciated by the guests there. T Mr. John W. Adams of Pinebluft will be in our village next Monday for the purpose of forming a class in Spanish. He has lived among Spanish speaking people for many years and is well quali fied to teach this language. Those wish ing to join this class can have Mr. Adams call on them by leaving their names at this office. A party of about half a dozen enjoyed a ride after H. II. Powell's pack of fox hounds last Friday, the chase starting in the centre of our village. The dogs were brought here in a wagon and were lib erated after the man with the aniseed bag had gained a good start. The chase attracted considerable attention from our villagers. Among the riders was Mr. E. II. Day of the Berkshire. The Southern Railway Company announces that privilege to stop over at High Point, N. C, has been arranged for all winter tourist tickets bearing transit limit of fifteen days. Side trip tickets can be purchased from High Point to Pinehurst and return, via Asheboro, at a rate of $3.90. Northern people traveling to and from Florida via Southern Rail way will now find it convenient to visit oar village. Sunday Services. The following religious services will be held in the Village Hall next Sunday: 10.45 a. m., preaching service. 12.00 in., Sunday school. 3.15 p. in., Episcopal services, Rev. Mr. Gregory officiating. 7.15 p. m., praise and prayer service. A cordial invitation is extended to all. Notice. Ladies and gentlemen wishing to join the glee club formed for purely social purposes will kindly leave their names or see Mr. St. Clair at the Village Hall any day between 9 a. m. and 6 p. m. to arrange hours for practice. Mr. St. Clair will gladly give his services in the teaching and conducting of this club, as it is the wish of the management to make the singing of the quartets, glees, trios and part songs a feature of the happy home-like life in the village. lin eli nr. st Vocal Studio. The Pinehurst Vocal Studio is now open, and pupils will be received any day becween the hours of 9 a. m. and G p. in. The teaching is most thorough and com plete, and develops the voice rapidly and naturally either for opera, oratorio, or concert, by the celebrated Lamperti sys tem of teaching. Dramatic action is also included in the operatic course. Mr. A. D. St. Clair is a very competent teacher of this (now recognised as the most natural and correct) system of singing, he having began and completed his vocal studies with the elder Lamperti at Milan md being brought out by him in grand opera at La Scala and Teatro Royale Naples and other opera houses in Italy, md throughout Europe, England, Aus tralia, India, Cairo, Cape Town, etc. He came to this country with Madame Patti, md was for six seasons one of her lead ing tenors. He was a member of the old Abbey, Grau & Co., Carl Rosa, and IVOley Carte companies, and is widely ind favorably known as a successful teacher in New York City. Card of Thanks.
