Carpenter, Manager Yet when the heart's full of joy and spirits are gay. With dear friends about us and Fate seems ho kind; The charm of life's sunshine drives sadness away, And pictures of happiness tilt through the mind; Will this last? then we ask, and In spirit we writhe, And stare down life's vista till vision grows dim, At the new picture seen, Old Time with his scythe, Just beyond him Is Death, botli silent and grim When burdened with sorrow and weighted with woe, Borne down by affliction till weary of heart; Surely then we'll escape this pitiless foe? Nay, still falls his shadow our pathway athwart. Childhood and youth full of hope and ambition, Manhood with strength, years of maturity bring; Feeble old age in its helpless condition, All, all bow the knee to this tyrant and king. The high and the low, whatever their station, The rich and the poor, every nation and clan, For all 'twas decreed at the time of creation, And none, none can escape death's merciless ban. Each owns his life, but he has no clear title, An encumbrance there is, how sad but how true! Death holds the claim, he'll demand a requital ; The claim we must pay when the debt shall fall due. But 'tis idle to mourn und tremble with fear; Life still may be blessed, if we keep this in view, Though death hath no mercy, this thought gives us cheer, He can't press the claim 'till the debt shall fall due. Let us laugh at old death, cringe to him never, In joy, not in fear, we will live while we may; Let us work as though we might live forever, But while living remember death may call today. Walter II. Pauckls. Progressive Euchre. The guests at the Berkshire enjoyed a progressive euchre party in the parlors at that hostelry last Wednesday evening and a goodly number were in attendance.
