Freeman, of the Montclair Golf Club, New Jersey, as the subject. Mr. Freeman has spent several winters at Pinehurst, and is now at The Carolina lor the season. He has been prominent in amateur events about New York City, for three years past, and is generally regarded as a coming man ; a dangerous opponent at either medal or match play. His form is clean-cut and graceful and his game driving, approaching and putting is characterized by general excellence and steadiness. He holds a record of seven ty-seven on the Pinehurst course, and has recently made two rounds in eighty. His handicap in the State (New Jersey) championship was two, and in the Met ropolitan, eight. Itlen are Enjoying' New Quarters at The Holly Inn, The new Dutch or smoking room at The Holly Inn is now complete and af fording much comfort and pleasure. It is handsomely finished, appropriately furnished, and well ventilated. The wainscoting and ceiling are sheathed in pine and finished in the natural color, and the heavy timbers and woodwork done in imitation of walnut, making an exceedingly effective treatment. The polished hardwood floor is covered with a rich rug, and the chairs and tables are in antique oak, varied in design. XIII WEEKLY H01S. They are Bfow Important Social fea tures oi me week. The hops at The Carolina Saturdav evenings and The Holly Inn Thursday evenings, are now important weekly social features, attended generally by the guests of the Village. They are much enjoyed particularly by the voumr- er people. The program will be varied soon by the introduction of costume parties, Germans and the like, Whist at line Grove House. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Eaton, of Whit field, N. II., gave a whist party for the guests of Pine Grove House during the week. Mr. Wallace West and Miss Irene Pottle won the first prizes, and Mr. H. li. Slillings and Miss Eshenshade the consolations. OOLF TO-TIOItlMMV. Open Handicap Medal Play Events for lloth Itlen and Women. The second event in the winters pro gram of stated golf fixtures, takes place to-morrow; open medal play eighteen hole handicap events for men and wo men. There are cups for the best net and gross scores for the men, and a cup lor the bet net score for the women. A number of the beautiful trophies offered for the winter's program of golf and shooting tournaiii' nts, are on exhi bition at The Carolina, making a bril liant display and attracting much atten tion. These trophies will be shown at the various hotels. ''Recreation" has contributed a trophy in the shape of a handsome deer head which will be contested for later. Tea at Colf Club House. The tea at the Golf Club House, Satur day afternoon, the second in the winter's series, was in charge of the matrons of the week: Mrs. Montgomery A. Crock ett, Buffalo, N. Y., and Mrs. M. J. Ta- braham, New Ipswich, N. H., from The Carolina; Mrs. C. A. Atkinson, Newburyport, Mass., and Mrs. Carl Gildersleeve, Warren, Penn., from The Holly Inn; Mrs. C. B. Lake, Fall River, Mass., and Miss Brackett, Boston, from The Berkshire ; Mrs. B. A. Stone, Mo hawk, N. Y., and Mrs. G. W. Murdock, Cold Springs, N. Y., from The Harvard; Mrs. Tewksbury, Lynn, Mass., and Miss Pott, Summitt, N. J., from the cottages. Mrs. A. I. Creamer poured and wait resses from The Holly Inn served. Ground Hog Hay. Monday was "Ground Hog Day." The editor is informed by a very sweet young woman, that at this time the ground hog comes from his winter re treat for the purpose of getting informa tion concerning the coming of spring. Tradition has it that if the ground hog sees his shadow he returns to his hole to remain for a period of six weeks and to escape the severe weather which is to come. If this be true there is nothing to fear during the closing weeks of winter, for Monday was a cloudy day.
