In the tie shoot of Tuesday morning Wilson won the trophy, with thirty kills against Lard's twenty-seven, It was a close and uncertain contest from first to last, which kept the interest of those present keenly alive. Fifteen singles and twenty doubles were shot. On the singles, Lard missed his tenth and fifteenth birds, and Wilson the third and fifth, but on the handicap allowance of three birds, Wilson scc.ed three straight, making a total of sixteen out of fifteen. In the doubles Lard missed the third, sixth, ninth, eleventh and twen tieth birds, scoring fifteen, and Wilson, the second, third, fourth, seventh, eighth, tenth, eleventh, thirteenth and seventeenth, scoring eleven. On his handicap allowance of seven birds, he killed six. Summary: Lard, 13 singles, 15 doubles 28 ; Wilson, 16 singles, 14 doubles, 30. Some question was raised as to wheth er Wilson was entitled to the sixteenth bird in the string of fifteen, but the mat ter was of little consequence as it did not effect the result. The committee, how ever, ruled that Wilson was entitled to the bird in question. i:itvi: a ii ii ! i:. Curiosity Arousing Structure Like Everything' Else in lMnehurst. The odd little structure which stands by the roadside at the rear and midway between The Magnolia and The Berk shire, is an object of much curiosity. In appearance it is a wood cylinder painted white, and capped with an octa gonal cover of wood and glass, painted in red, with a blue ornament on top. A peep inside gives little information, re vealing only a circular red sandstone. This stone, however, is the cap of the brick column upon which Professor Skinner of the Naval Observatory at Washington, mounted a transit instru ment when the last total eclipse of the sun was observed at Pinehurst under his direction by a corps of astronomers. At that time Pinehurst was determined to be in longitude West from Green wich, 79 minutes, 28 degrees and 10 seconds, and in North latitude 35 degrees 11 minutes, 38.2 seconds.
