In a republic, deriving its powers from the consent of the people, an intel ligent electorate is not only the sole guaranty of the just preservation of the of the rights of men, and the safety and perpetuity of free institutions, but it is now recognized by every state of this union and by every civilized nation upon the earth, that the free education of the people is industrially profitable to the commonwealth. The universal verdict of all history is, that man's power and capacity as a wealth producer is multi plied in direct proportion to his education and training. The material wealth and progress of a state can be measured by the school ad vantages of its people Gov. J. B. Frazier. IttlZVKI DOUIILEI TO.lS. J". M. Merrill and II. . Reynolds are Invincible. Ull.H. llANISTEll HEADS. An Evening: of Plantation Stories Much Enjoyed. Mrs. Correllia Banister entertained the guests of The Carolina Tuesday evening, and The Holly Inn Wednesday evening, with a series of plantation stories. Mrs. Banister possesses a pleasing manner and a musical voice which is enchauced by a slight Southern accent. Her stories were quaint, humorous and sad, and in them negro dialect was delicately inter woven. Mrs, Banister i3 the author of a book, "I'm a Brick," which sets forth the argu ments used by various disputants at a Congress of religions, supposed to have been held at Onset Bay, and states some very plain truths in regard to their utterances. Sham and pretense, assump tion and credulity, mediocrity and ignor ance, are all vigorously handled. Its object is to evolve a higher degree of spirituality by giving better understanding.
