One frequently hears it said that the states of the South pay for public schools as much in proposition to the value of their taxable property as the richer states of other sections. In some cases this is true, but in most cases it is not true, as the following figures show : Tennessee pays at the rate of$.461 on each $100 worth of taxable property ; Arkansas at the rate of $.623 ; Florida at the rate of $.703 ; Louisiana .378 ; Mis souri $.422 ; Minnesota $.593 ; Nebraska at the rate of $2.74 ; Utah at the rate of $1.364 ; California at the rate of $,581 ; Colorado at the rate of $1 .355 ; Connecti cut at the rate of $.429; New York at the rate of $.603 ; Illinois at the rate of $2,084. There are states in other sec tions that pay for common school educa tion twice as much in proportion to the value of their taxable property as does any Southern state. In the exploration of tropical waters, the dense growth of aquatic plants often so obstructs the screw that an ordinary steam launch is made use less. It was to overcome this difficulty that Count Zeppelin constructed his launch with propellers in the air, and so effective has the new method of propul sion proven that the light boat, drawing only 10 inches, skims the water at 14 to 16 miles an hour. Next Wednesday's shoot is the last of the winter's program of stated trap shooting fixtures, fifty-single birds for the magnificent Frank Presbrey ' trophy, now on exhibition at The Carolina, and the event is arousing especial interest. There will be two classes, A. and B, both to be shot from scratch, and The Pinehurst Department Store has con tributed a handsome stein as a trophy in class B. A, big list of entries and a large com pany of onlookers is expected. The event starts at 10,30 A, M. Other events will fill in the Wednes days of April, and shooting at birds thrown from the tower which has iust been erected, promises to be a novel and interesting feature. Euchre at The Berkshire. Six-handed euchre is becoming popu lar at The Berkshire, and the weekly card party Tuesday evening was well attended. The prize winners were Mr. A. T. Madden, New York city, and Miss Anna T. Cahill, Worcester, Mass., Mr. A. T. Leavitt, of WTollaston, Mass., and Miss Monaghan. The consolation prizes were won by Dr. Traver of Providence, and Miss Litchfield of Amesbury, Mass. Cncumben for Many. Two greenhouses of cucumbers are maturing very rapidly at the Pinehurst Market Garden and will soon delight the guests of the various hotels by ap peariug on the tables. Radishes, spinach and other spring vegetables are being sent to the hotels in large quanti ties daily. Mr. and Mm. Mills Entertain. Mr. and Mrs. James W. Mills of Phila delphia, entertained the guests of The Berkshire with a progressive six handed euchre party Friday evening. Miss Alice Grant Reynolds gave an ar butus luncheon at the Plymouth Cot tage during the week. There were present : Miss Tewksbury, Miss Priest, Miss Bradbury, Miss McCarthy and Miss Baxter. Arbutus was used very effect ively for decoration. Oolf Tomorrow. Tomorrow's golf tournament is a con solation tournament for the Pinehurst cup, open to all who have taken part in one or more previous tournaments, but have won no prizes. Unusual interest is manifest.
