One frequently hears it said that
the states of the South pay for public
schools as much in proposition to the
value of their taxable property as the
richer states of other sections. In some
cases this is true, but in most cases it is
not true, as the following figures show :
Tennessee pays at the rate of$.461 on
each $100 worth of taxable property ;
Arkansas at the rate of $.623 ; Florida at
the rate of $.703 ; Louisiana .378 ; Mis
souri $.422 ; Minnesota $.593 ; Nebraska
at the rate of $2.74 ; Utah at the rate of
$1.364 ; California at the rate of $,581 ;
Colorado at the rate of $1 .355 ; Connecti
cut at the rate of $.429; New York at the
rate of $.603 ; Illinois at the rate of
$2,084. There are states in other sec
tions that pay for common school educa
tion twice as much in proportion to the
value of their taxable property as does
any Southern state.
In the exploration of tropical
waters, the dense growth of aquatic
plants often so obstructs the screw that
an ordinary steam launch is made use
less. It was to overcome this difficulty
that Count Zeppelin constructed his
launch with propellers in the air, and so
effective has the new method of propul
sion proven that the light boat, drawing
only 10 inches, skims the water at 14 to
16 miles an hour.
Clover with four leaves is no longer
merely a curious freak, as De Vries, the
Dutch biologist, has produced it as a
normal variety after long-continued
selection.
