The past week has been a notable one in the history of Pinehurst, for with a single bound, the annual United North and South amateur championship tourna ment takes its place, not only as the leading event of its kind in the South and the event of the winter, but one of the important contests of the year. Never before in the history of amateur golf have a series of more interesting matches been played, and the Beckwith Ward match justly ranks and unques tionably stands as one of the prettiest, cleanest contests ever seen anywhere. Interest was not confined to the Vil lage and the South alone, but has ex tended throughout the country as well, and telegraphic stories of the tourna ment in its various stages have occupied prominent positions in the leading dailies of the country, the New York Herald, New York Sun, New York Times, New York Commercial Advertiser, Boston Transcript, and Boston Herald, among them Associated Press dispatches have covered the entire country, and the eyes of the golfing world are notv turned toward Pinehurst with new interest and new understanding. The prospect for the future is a very pleasant one. AN JUVENINC OF FAllEWEXXS. Good-Byes at The Cedars in Which Smilea and Tears Mingled. The family feeling, which is such a delightful feature of life at The Cedars, was especially emphasized last week by a farewell reception to Mrs, George White, son and daughter, of Bridgeport, Ct., on the eve of their departure, after the winter here. It was an informal home gathering, and the hours sped mer rily away in jest, song and story. Light refreshments were served by a committee of women of which Mrs. W. F. Robinson, of Portsmouth, N. II., was chairman. The evening closed with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne," the com pany rising and joining hands. As Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Hoe and Miss Roe, of Elmira, N. Y., Mr. and Mrs. Willis Underhill, of Portsmouth, N. II., and Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Underhill, and Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Underhill, of Winthrop, Mass., were soon to leave, they also shared in the evening which will linger in memory as an occasion in which smiles and tears mingled. Beckwith Makes Remarkable Round in Open Tournament With Card of Seventy-one Profen Hlonal Donald X. lloss Easy Win ner of Tournament With One Hundred and Forty-Seven. The closing and a special feature of the United North and South champion ship tournament was an open thirty-six hole medal-play event Wednesday, in which many of the players in the tourna ment and a number of prominent profes sionals participated. The event was made of unusual interest by the fact that Beckwith, the 1903 champion, reduced the amateur record of the course on his afternoon round, making a seventy-one, which equals the professional record re cently established by Professional Donald J. Ross. Beckwith's card is remarkable because it shows no "fluke" shots. There are six threes, but not a single two, and had a short six-foot putt been holed on the thirteenth hole and a long putt which rimmed the cup and lay dead on the eighteenth, the card would have been sixty-nine. Excellent golf and a cool head are two things accountable for this remarkable record, Beckwith's drives were long and straight and his approaching little short of phenomenal. In addition to this several splendid putts were made. The story of the great round is clearly told in the following detailed card. Out 34353454 435 In 43345453 53671 This score is nine under bogey and it lowers the record made by Vardon and which held for many years, two strokes. The existing amateur records for the course are a seventy-three for E. A. Free man, made in play with Mrs. M. D. Pat erson recently; seventy-five for F. C. Reynolds, made early in March in play with F. J. Bailey ; seventy-six made by C. II. Bartlett of Springfield, Mass., made in tournament play in 1902. J. G. Thorpe of Boston, and several others hold records for seventy-seven. Rom Winn Tournament. The tournament was won easily by Professional Donald J. Ross with a card of one hundred and forty-seven, rounds of seventy-three and seventy-four, with Professional J. A. Jolly, New York city, second with one hundred and fifty-one, and Alex Ross third with one hundred and fifty-five. Beckwith tied with Pro fessional Alex II, Findlay, Boston, for fourth place and took the cup offered for the best amateur score. John M, Ward of the Fox Hills Golf Club, the runner up to Beckwith in the championship, finished fifth with one hundred and sixty one. There were purses for the three best professional scores.
