GERHAN KALI WORKS, .n VLfl!t X'numi Ktrpnf. or COMPILED BY DR. HALE. Collection of Ballads Illustrative of New . England History. Some Written hy lllmelf, Some hy IIIm Cliiltlren ami Others hy Various Author. Rev. Dr. Edward Everett Hale has long been a frequent visitor at and great admirer of Pinehurst, and he has many warm acquaintances among those who spend their winters here. And not only to these, but to others, will "Bal lads of New England History," published by Little, Brown & Company, Boston, be of special interest. In this volume Dr. Hale has brought together ballads illustrative of New England History; some written by himself, some by his children, and others by various authors. There are some fugitive ballads also, of unknown authorship which have a legiti mate place in such a collection. Of historical poems relating to New England, the author mentions several by those masters of English verse Long fellow, Whittier, Holmes and Lowell which have become classics. These, how ever, are so well known that he repro duces only a few of them, indicating where the others are to be found. Of those collected manj' are more valuable for their historic interest than for the beauty of their lines. Among these are the original "Yankee Doodle," the bal lad of "Captain Kidd," and "John Brown's Body." Perhaps the best of the poems written by Mr. Hale, which appear in this col lection, is "The First Settlers," of which we give the last stanza : "And I ? Is there some desert or some boundless sea, Where th ou, great God of angels, wilt send me? Some oak for me to rend, some sod For me to break, Some handful of thy corn to take And scatter far afield, 'Till it in turn shall yield Its hundred fold Of grains of gold, To feed the happy children of my God? Show me the desert, Father, or the sea. Is it thine enterprise? Great God, send me ! And though the body lie where ocean rolls, Father, count me among all faithful souls!" The book is a beautiful specimen of typographical art; finely printed, richly bound, and well illustrated. l ' - -'!.ir-. V ' A 5 He v.
