Mau rice Espagnent to solve the problem of measuring the speed of automobiles with great accuracy. It consists of a time recorder with tape moved by clock-work, a stylus that is made to mark on the tape by one electromagnet and is pulled away by the second, and two contact-bands in an electric circuit with the magnets. In use the contact-bands are placed across the tract at a distance apart of a kilo meter or a mile. When the vehicle presses one band the first magnet forces the stylus against the tape, causing a contiuous line to be made on the moving ribbon until the stylus is withdrawn as the passage of the second band energizes the second magnet. The length of the line drawn shows the time to the fiftieth of a second or less. An estimate of the water-power used for generating electricity has been made by a German engineer. Germany and Austria thus utilize 180,000 horse-power; Switzerland, about 100,000; Sweden, 200,000 ; and the United States, 400,000. The total available power in Sweden is placed at 2,000,000 horse-power ; that of France, at 10,000,000 ; that of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Italy together at 10,000,000 ; while in the United States Niagara alone could furnish 10,000,000. Some of the giant Sequoias of South ern California are estimated to be from 5,000 to 8,000 years old, having peiliaps spanned the entire period of written his tory. A section in the American Mu seum of Natural History, cut from one of these trees at a height of twenty feet, is more than eighteen feet in diameter, and its concentric rings show that it be gan its growth in 550 A. D, This would give the tree a diameter of thirteen feet at the time of Columbus' landing. In one hundred analyses of the air on Mont Blanc's summit not a single microbe was found, although they were plentiful in the observatory. The num ber showed a steady increase in descend ing the mountain. TRAP SHOOTING EVENTS. Tournament Programme is One of Ex ceptional Interest.
