THE PINEHURST OUTLOOK SHOWS STEADY INCREASE House Count at The Carolina Continues to be Record-Breaking. John 1. Not only are there arrivals, but the percentage who come for the season, and those who are mak ing return visits is large. Hit. ROCKEFELLER LEAVES. John D. Rockefeller, the financier, left for New York Monday night after a stay extending over more than two weeks. lie came at first to spend ten days here, but was so delighted with the place that he prolonged his visit as long as his many engagements would permit, and he leaves planning to return again soon. Mr. Rockefeller has charmed all he has met and his return will be antici pated with pleasure. P AMONG THE GUESTS. Col. and Mrs. J. Ernest Smith of Wil mington, Del., have gone after a pleasant visit. Mr. S. 11. Vicker and Mr. John N. Tait of Baltimore, are enjoying several weeks golf. Mr, James D. Foot of Rye, N. Y., is here for an extended stay and enjoying excellent shooting on the Pinehurst Preserves. Mrs. Samuel Mather of Cleveland, Ohio, and Mr. A. S. Mather of New Haven, came early in the week. Mr. Mather will make an extended stay. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Green, son and nurse of Buffalo, N. Y., were visitors duriug the week. They will return later for a more extended visit. Mrs. Thomas Gale and Mr. Thomas K. Gale of Syracuse, N. Y., were here for a few days last week. Mr. and Mrs Alexander B. Scott of Philadelphia, come for a short stay. Mr. and Mrs. VV. Alton Burpee of Philadelphia, were recent visitors. Mr. and Mrs, Judson Williams of Lynn, Mass., are here for the season. Miss Sopher of Baltimore, Md., joins Mrs. J. Hall Pleasants. Mrs. W. 15. Peters and Miss Alice Peters of New York, join Mr. Peters for an extended visit. Mr. and Mrs. It. A. Osborne, Miss Marguerite Osborne of Newark, N. J., are among the guests. Mr. and Mrs. II. D. Lentz, Mr. and Mrs. William O. Lentz and maid, Mr. LaFayette Lentz, Mr.LaFayette Lentz Jr., Mrs. II.A.Butler of Mauch Chunk, Pa., are here for a lengthy stay. Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Paxton and Miss Paxton of Princeton, N. J., were recent guests. Mrs. Herbert L. Jillson of Worcester, Mass, joins Mr. Jillson for the remainder of the season, Mr. B. M. Clark and Mr. J. Lockhart of Washington, Pa., were recent visi tors. Mr. II. L. Downey of New York, and Mr. George R. Pirie of Hamilton, Ont., are among the guests. Mr. W. A. Hopkins of Boston, will re main through February. Mr. F. W. Hammond and daughter, Mrs. C. M. Dinsmore of Clinton, Mass., come for several weeks and a return visit. Mr. Hammond will enjoy the shooting. Mr. and Mrs. George F. Valentine of New York, are making a visit which will extend over several weeks. Mr. C. Appleton Warren of New York, joins Le Roy W. Johnson. Mrs. M. D. Paterson, Miss Clarice E. Paterson and maid of New York, come for their third season, Mrs. Paterson was the winner of the Woman's Cup in the United North and South Amateur Championship last spring and she holds the woman's record for the Pinehurst course at eighty-six. Mrs. Paterson is a charming woman who has many friends here. Mr, and Mrs. Galen L. Stone and Mr. and Mrs. Charles R, Talbot of Brookline, Mass., join Mr. and Mrs. William R. Whiting. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Buck, Mrs. S. A. Floyd of Cambridge, Mass., are here for the season. Mrs. C. F, DeLong, Miss B. DeLong, Miss Dorothy DeLong, Master Charles DeLong of Philadelphia, are here for an indefinite stay. Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Heffelfinger of Minneapolis, Minn., join their daugh ters. Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Cooke of Paterson, N. J., were guests during the week. Mr. and Mrs. William Ti otter of New York, come for February, joining Mr. and Mrs. Peters. Mr. T. D. Cargill and Mr. Harold W. Hoffman of Minneapolis, Minn., are here for a long stay. Mr. and Mrs. John II. Lyon of Brooklyn, are here for an extended visit. Xuchre at The Harvard. The regular vveeklv progressive euchre party was much enjoyed at The Harvard Thursday evening, the guests generally participating. Mrs. G. W. Muidock of Cold Springs, New York., was the win ner of the first womans prize, and Mrs. II. R. Staplin of Northamp0on, Mass., the second. Dr, G. W. Murdock and Mr. M. B. Brynes of New York, were the winners of the mens prizes. At the close of plav daintv refresh ments were served. Hearts at The Carolina. E. Barnett, New llaven, Conn. Putting: Contest at The Inn. A putting contest furnished a pleasant evening at The Holly Inn Wednesday. Mr. Walter A. Berg of Boston, and Miss Cutler of Boston, won the prizes offered. The participants included many of the Villagers, Following the contest prizes were given by Mr. and Mrs F. P, Duryea for both men and women, and Mr. M. C. Parshall of Warren, Pa., and Miss Tofl'ey oi je,varK, were the winners. The Berkshire is filling rapidly and each day adds to the numbers who are assembled at this popular family hotel. The social pleasures of the past ten days have been numerous, including not only the weekly card party, but a potato race followed by afternoon tea, and a most amusing and ludicrous donkey party. The participants pinned the many tails which the animal possessed in every conceivable position but the right one. Mrs. Hugh C, Anderson of Pittsburg, Pa., won the prize offered for the best location of the animal's "fly-shooer." AMONG THE GUESTS. Mr. B. R. Seymour and Mr. Ernest J. Livezey of Philadelphia, come to remain several months. Mr. Andrew Brown of Fayette City, Pa., is renewing pleasant associations made on a previous visit. Mr. J. C. Six-handed euchre supplanted hearts at the weekly card party at The Berk shire, Tuesday evening. Miss Mary Lovett of Philadelphia, captured the first "mens" prize, Mr. M. B. Byrnes of New York, the second, and Mrs. A. V. Secor of Brooklyn, the consolation. The womens prizes were won by Mrs. F. P, Marsh of New York, Miss M. J. White head of Boston, and Mrs. Roberts.
